What you will do:

The role is responsible for contributing to AIL’s culture by exhibiting collaboration, curiosity, resilience, leadership and accountability in a manner which supports AIL’s employee wellness, environmental sustainability, and profitability.

Reporting to the Engineering and Operations Manager, Sound Wall Division with support from Technical Leads, The Structural Designer Engineer supports the development of innovative and cost-effective soundwall product designs for Canadian, U.S., and international markets. This role combines technical expertise with creativity, ensuring projects are completed with a focus on safety, efficiency, and long-term durability. The engineer will also contribute to research and development initiatives and provide mentorship to junior colleagues and co-op students.

Responsibilities:

Design Structures-Support the design of innovative, cost-effective soundwall products for Canadian, U.S., and international markets, focusing on low to medium risk projects.

Research and Development-Contribute to R&D initiatives by exploring new materials, methods, and design approaches that enhance product performance and efficiency.

Structural and Geotechnical Analysis-Apply finite element analysis (FEA) and other engineering tools to evaluate structural and geotechnical systems. Support investigations to address soil, loading, and site-specific conditions impacting design outcomes.

Risk Resolution-Address and resolve low-risk project issues arising during design, fabrication, or construction, ensuring project timelines and quality standards are maintained.

Code Compliance-Ensure designs meet Canadian, U.S., and international codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements.

Collaboration and Mentorship-Work closely with colleagues, co-op students, and new hires, providing technical guidance, training, and ongoing support to strengthen team capability.

Process Execution-Skillfully apply Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to maintain quality and consistency across design activities.

Documentation
Prepare clear design calculations, reports, and drawings to communicate technical details with project teams, clients, and stakeholders.

What you will need:

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Engineering degree with knowledge and experience in structural and geotechnical engineering with eligibility to be registered as a Professional Engineer in Ontario within 2-3 years.
  • 1 - 2 years of engineering experience with a consulting firm, or working with a specialist product.
  • Refined analysis (finite element) knowledge in either geotechnical and/or structural engineering fields is considered an asset.
  • Experience with industry recognized software such as Tekla would be considered an asset.
  • Strong critical thinking skills.
  • Effective project management skills.
  • Effective planning and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual (English/French) considered an asset.
