Fleet Safety Assistant

Reporting to the Fleet Safety Supervisor, the Fleet Safety Assistant (FSA) is a uniformed position that is primarily responsible for providing support to Fleet Safety Officers and Fleet Safety Section in managing the City of Edmonton Driver Safety Program. This includes fielding phone calls from employees reporting incidents involving City vehicles, fielding questions relating to compliance of legislation involving commercial vehicles, as well as assisting with investigation of minor collisions.
As a Fleet Safety Assistant you will also be responsible for assisting monitoring processes/systems to ensure drivers and vehicles are in compliance with our Driver Safety Program and legislation.
What will you do?
- Conduct a comprehensive review of driver abstracts, to analyze driving records and escalate concerns to the Fleet Safety Supervisor
- Actively identify potential problem drivers by considering various factors and collaborate with the Fleet Safety Supervisor to implement corrective measures
- Conduct detailed pre-employment screening, including reviewing driver abstracts from various countries, to assess potential risk factors for prospective employees operating City vehicles
- Efficiently manage road test evaluation requests, coordinating schedules, communicating with various areas, and maintaining organized records
- Personally conduct road tests to assess driving competency, evaluating various aspects of driving, and issue or activate City Driving Permits based on the results
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date driver records in City data systems, ensuring data integrity for reporting and auditing purposes
- Develop and deliver comprehensive driver training programs to educate employees on safe driving practices, relevant legislation, and City-specific policies.
- Act as a central point of contact for vehicle-related incidents, receiving reports, dispatching Fleet Safety Officers, and coordinating with other departments for timely response
- Manage the vehicle registration process for all City of Edmonton vehicles, ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations
Qualifications:
- Completion of Grade 12
- A minimum of 3 years experience in the safety industry or in a regulatory environment
Assets:
- 5+ years experience in the safety industry or in a regulatory environment
- Post-secondary course work in adult education or instruction with experience in the safety industry
- Defensive driving instruction experience
- Road test evaluation experience or able to learn
- Experience with SAP, SAP Ariba, PeopleSoft,, POSSE, M5
- Collision Investigation Level II
- Certified Transportation Safety Professional CTSP designation
- Standard First Aid, CPR, and AED Certification
Skills required for success:
- Demonstrable knowledge of the Federal and Provincial Legislation as it applies to Fleet operations
- Considerable knowledge of Federal, Provincial, and relevant municipal legislation, with particular emphasis on National Safety Code Standards
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external clients
- Ability to evaluate and develop appropriate safety related training presentations
- Ability to maintain accurate records and statistical information
- Experience in reviewing driver abstracts
- Well-developed conflict management or conflict resolution skills
- Ability to interpret and implement regulations impartially and tactfully
- Experience and knowledge in relation to Transportation of Dangerous Goods legislation
- Ability to work outdoors for extended periods and under unfavorable weather conditions at collision scenes in traffic hazards as required during an investigation
- Demonstrated proficiency with excellent written and verbal communication skills

Conditions of Employment:
- Driver’s licence class 1, 2 preferred (Class 5, 4, 3 but able to upgrade)
- Successful candidates may be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton's safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toed boots, is a requirement for this position
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Airbrake endorsement (or able to upgrade)

- Heat, cold, wet, dust, noise, and diesel exhaust fumes
