Bevo Farms Ltd is the largest supplier of propagated plants in North America, providing greenhouses, field farms, nurseries, and wholesalers across the continent with healthy, vigorous, pest-and-disease-free plants. Bevo operates four facilities in the lower mainland of British Columbia and two facilities in the province of Alberta.

SUMMARY

Bevo Farms Ltd. is seeking a skilled and proactive Maintenance Technician to support our large-scale, highly automated greenhouse operation. This role is crucial to ensuring our facilities operate efficiently and effectively to produce top-quality plants for retailers and suppliers across North America. The ideal candidate will possess a robust technical background with hands-on experience in maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing complex automated agricultural systems that integrate electrical, mechanical, automation, optical sensors, and software components. This role will be based in Langley, British Columbia and report direct to the Maintenance Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Maintenance and Repair: Perform routine and preventive maintenance on greenhouse equipment, including but not limited to HVAC systems, irrigation, seeding and planting machines, conveyors, environmental control systems, and automated systems.

  • Troubleshooting: Quickly diagnose and resolve equipment issues to minimize downtime, using expertise in electrical, mechanical, and automated systems, as well as interpreting data from sensors and software alerts.

  • Calibration and Adjustment: Calibrate and adjust equipment to ensure optimal performance, that meets productivity standards.

  • Documentation and Reporting: Accurately document maintenance activities, troubleshooting procedures, and repairs, providing reports as required. Maintain records of equipment performance and log any adjustments or repairs made.

  • Collaboration: Work closely with the greenhouse operations team, including growers, production staff, and supervisors, to understand production needs and ensure equipment supports operational efficiency and timelines.

  • Collaborate with the Preventative Maintenance Manager and Maintenance Project Manager to address operational challenges and implement shared solutions.

  • Safety Compliance: Follow and promote strict adherence to all safety and compliance standards, especially when handling high-voltage electrical systems and other hazardous equipment. Identify any safety risks in equipment or procedures and take corrective action.

  • Continuous Improvement: Actively participate in identifying areas for process improvements and enhancements to automation systems to optimize productivity and reduce manual interventions.

  • Rotating Duty Maintenance Requirement. Provides after-hours back-up support to the Operations team for emergencies.

SKILLS

  • Technical Expertise:
    • Proficiency in maintaining and troubleshooting electrical, mechanical, and automation systems, including familiarity with programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
    • Working knowledge of sensors (optical, thermal, etc.), software-based control systems, and environmental monitoring technology in agricultural settings.
    • Familiarity with calibration and adjustment processes for complex automated systems.
  • Experience in Automated Systems:
    • Minimum of 3 years of experience in a similar role, ideally in an agricultural, food processing, or industrial automation environment.
    • Experience with maintenance of conveyor belts, pumps, motors, and environmental control systems.
  • Analytical Skills:
    • Ability to read and interpret schematics, blueprints, and technical documentation.
    • Strong troubleshooting skills with the ability to analyze data from sensors and other automated systems to diagnose and fix issues.
  • Problem-Solving Abilities:
    • Excellent critical-thinking skills to identify root causes of equipment issues and implement effective solutions.
    • Ability to remain calm under pressure and manage time effectively during urgent repairs.
  • Team-Oriented:
    • Collaborative mindset with the ability to communicate effectively with other departments and work as part of a cohesive maintenance team.
    • Actively participate in cross-functional meetings to share updates, insights, and challenges, fostering a collaborative team environment.
    • Commit to cross-training efforts by learning key responsibilities from other roles and sharing expertise in their area of focus.
  • Safety-Oriented:
    • Strong commitment to safety practices and understanding of occupational health and safety standards.

EDUCATION

  • Required:
    • High school diploma or equivalent.
    • Certification in Industrial Maintenance, Automation Technology, or related field.
  • Preferred:
    • Journeyman electrician or millwright certification.
    • Power Engineer qualitication.
    • Previous training or certifications in safety standards (e.g., OSHA or local equivalents).
    • Additional certifications in PLC programming or automation are a plus.
