Opportunity

MacEwan University is seeking a Senior Systems Administrator, Windows for a full-time continuing opportunity with the Information Technology Services department.

The Senior Systems Administrator, Windows is responsible for the design, implementation, and optimization of the institution’s core IT infrastructure. You play a critical role in ensuring the scalability, security, and high availability of Windows systems that support academic, research, and administrative functions. You will also lead operational infrastructure projects and collaborate across IT teams to deliver resilient and future-ready platforms. The Senior Systems Administrator Windows role will be the subject matter expert (SME) for all Windows systems and a mentor for junior admins.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting capacity planning and performance tuning to ensure optimal system performance and cost effectiveness;
  • Designing and deploying improved architectures to respond and adapt to evolving security and load capacity needs;
  • Implementing approved infrastructure modernization initiatives, including server refreshes, storage upgrades, and virtualization enhancements;
  • Building, installing, configuring, and maintaining enterprise systems, including physical servers, storage clusters, virtual machines, and supporting hardware;
  • Implementing secure, repeatable server deployment processes aligned with institutional standards;
  • Diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving complex infrastructure issues and performance bottlenecks, collaborating with cross-functional IT teams as needed;
  • Developing automation scripts and pipelines (e.g., PowerShell, Ansible, Terraform) to streamline deployments and maintenance;
  • Planning and coordinating lifecycle management of infrastructure components, including patching, upgrades, and hardware refresh cycles;
  • Designing and implementing failover solutions to ensure high availability of core systems during maintenance or hardware failure; and
  • Leveraging automation technologies to help with the deployment of servers and configuration and installation of tools and software.

SKILLS

You will have:

  • Proficiency and experience in administering both Windows Server and Linux operating systems;
  • Experience with infrastructure automation tools and scripting languages such as Python, PowerShell, Bash, Ansible, or Terraform;
  • Skills in using monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix, SolarWinds, Prometheus) and interpreting system logs for proactive issue resolution;
  • Working knowledge of virtualization, cloud technology, systems security, and automation tools;
  • Knowledge of SAN/NAS technologies, storage tiering, backup strategies, and disaster recovery tools;
  • Familiarity with cloud computing platforms (e.g., Microsoft Azure, AWS) and hybrid infrastructure integration;
  • The ability to manage hardware and software assets through their lifecycle, including upgrades, replacements, and decommissioning;
  • An understanding of infrastructure security best practices and experience applying patches, hardening configurations, and supporting compliance audits;
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks effectively;
  • The ability to troubleshoot infrastructure-related issues and perform root cause analysis;
  • Strong interpersonal skills (verbal and written) to interact with end-users, technical teams, and stakeholders at various levels;
  • The ability to translate technical concepts into accessible language for non-technical users and stakeholders;
  • A strong commitment to user experience and ensuring infrastructure solutions support academic, research, and administrative outcomes; and
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team-oriented collaborative environment.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in system administration in a complex IT environment.
  • Familiarity with or experience in a post-secondary or other public sector environment is considered an asset.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • The position participates in the ITS on-call schedule for after-hours support.
  • The position may be required to work outside of normal operational hours (i.e., evenings and weekends) to support urgent issues if they arise.
