The Building Department of the Climate Action, Planning and Development Services division has an opportunity for qualified individuals to apply for the position of Senior Building Official. Reporting to the Manager of Building Services, this position offers 72 hours bi-weekly, starting as soon as possible.

The Senior Building Official is a key technical role responsible for reviewing and inspecting Part 3 and Part 9 building and/or plumbing plans including commercial, industrial, institutional, and multi‑family residential projects to ensure compliance with the BC Building Code, municipal bylaws, and applicable legislation. This position leads complex plan reviews and inspections, provides technical guidance, and supports the full building permit and file‑closure process. The Senior Building Official also responds to enquiries and provides advice to the public and provides technical oversight and guidance to members of the department. 

Qualified candidates will possess a two-year Building Technology, Engineering, or Construction Diploma (or related BC trade certification), be a Registered Building Official (RBO) with 5 -7 years’ experience as a Level 3 Building Official or Registered Building Official with experience in plan review, inspection, researching, interpreting and applying bylaws, regulations and codes. Qualified candidates will have experience in local or regional government building and development operations, with excellent knowledge of the BC Building Code, National Building Code, BC Fire Code, applicable NFPA standards, municipal building bylaw, zoning bylaw, and Workers Compensation Regulations relating to Part 3 and Part 9 and considerable knowledge of the Architects and Engineers Acts. Qualified candidates will provide recommendations and guidance on interpretation of codes, bylaws, technical data, and permit process. 

The successful candidate is a professional, analytical, and organized individual with excellent verbal and written communication skills, who can effectively identify, analyze, and solve complex problems. The successful candidate can work under pressure, manage competing demands, effectively work with a variety of stakeholders with tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality, and provide leadership skills to guide and align the team The successful candidate will present or facilitate meetings or events providing technical leadership and oversight, be comfortable with challenges or conflicts, and can apply the skills to manage conflicts. The successful candidate demonstrates commitment to promoting a diverse and equitable workplace while contributing to a positive team environment. The starting salary for this role is $52.95 per hour. 

As a requirement of the position, the successful applicant must hold a valid BC class 5 driver’s license and must provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract and a satisfactory Police Information Check prior to beginning employment.
