About the role
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) is one of the largest healthcare systems in the United Kingdom, employing approximately 40,000 staff across a wide range of clinical and non-clinical professions and roles. We deliver acute hospital, primary, community and mental health services to a population of over 1.15 million people, and to a wider population of 2.2 million when regional and national services are included.
The Role This post facilitates timely and supported discharge from hospital through the provision of specialist rehabilitation for patients with a diagnosis of a new stroke. The key responsibilities of the service are to play a proactive role in the discharge process as well as providing ongoing therapeutic management and care for patients.
Therapeutic management utilises a range of physical, behavioural and cognitive modalities to regain function following stroke. This includes management of patients with complex pathology whose recovery and safety depends on appropriate OT intervention. There is also a key role in health promotion.
The service incorporates service management, planning and development within a defined budget and in an inter-professional framework. All staff within the OT service must comply with NHSGG&C and Departmental Policies in addition to complying with Professional Standards and Rules of Professional Conduct appropriate for that discipline.
Duration, Location, and Working Pattern: Permanent, Part time
Shift Pattern - 4/7 days
Base location - Queen Elizabeth University Hospital
Key Responsibilities Clinical Responsibilities
- Holds full professional and legal accountability for all aspects of practice, including direct and indirect patient care.
- Assesses patient capacity, obtains valid consent, and works appropriately within legal frameworks for patients lacking capacity.
- Independently assesses, analyses, and identifies occupational therapy needs for stroke patients, including those with complex or multiple conditions.
- Plans, delivers, evaluates, and progresses treatment programmes to maximise rehabilitation potential, including making discharge decisions.
- Manages an individual caseload efficiently and may act as key worker in multidisciplinary goal‑setting.
- Communicates effectively with colleagues, contributes to MDT meetings, and makes recommendations to support coordinated care.
- Screens referrals and undertakes baseline assessments across professional domains.
- Maintains up‑to‑date clinical knowledge through CPD and integrates new skills into practice, sharing learning with others.
- Keeps accurate, comprehensive patient records and mandatory statistics in line with professional and organisational standards.
Managerial Responsibilities
- Oversees day‑to‑day delivery of occupational therapy services within the specialty, liaising with the Team Lead.
- Delegates tasks and caseload elements to Support Workers to ensure efficient service delivery.
- Provides clinical supervision, guidance, and performance monitoring for designated staff, including multidisciplinary support workers.
- Develops systems to monitor care standards and clinical outcomes, benchmarking against similar services.
- Demonstrates leadership within the specialty and supports Support Workers through the KSF review process.
- Identifies service gaps or pressures and works with the Team Lead to implement solutions.
- Contributes to service development aligned with local objectives and public involvement.
- Participates in clinical audit and effectiveness projects to support Clinical Governance.
- Complies with and contributes to the updating of organisational and departmental policies.
Educational Responsibilities
- Contributes to and helps deliver in‑service training for the multidisciplinary team to enhance understanding of occupational therapy.
- Participates in relevant training and shares learning with colleagues.
- Provides specialist advice and teaching to staff, carers, relatives, and external agencies to support patient care.
- Delivers formal and informal teaching sessions within the wider stroke service.
- Supports the induction and development of new staff within the Stroke Team.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job: Essential Qualifications
- Diploma/Degree in Occupational Therapy
- Registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Mandatory and Statutory Training (e.g., Fire Safety, Moving & Handling)
Experience
- Highly specialist knowledge and application of occupational therapy within Stroke
- Supervisory experience supporting and developing staff
- Healthcare governance experience at specialist level (e.g., clinical effectiveness, audit, evidence‑based practice)
- Working knowledge of computers and their application
Behavioural Competencies
- Well‑developed organisational skills
- Strong observational skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills with patients, families, and colleagues
- Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team
Other
- Current UK driving licence
DESIRABLE Qualifications / Membership
- Membership of the British Association of Occupational Therapists
