John Ross & Sons Ltd. is searching for an energetic, motivated, and hands-on Junior Trader to join their energetic private enterprise.

Who We Are: John Ross is a fourth-generation, family-owned international scrap metal recycling business, operating for over 70 years, with eleven locations, making us the largest recycling facility in Atlantic Canada and one of the largest exporters out of the Port of Halifax.

Specializing in the purchasing, grading, and processing both ferrous and non-ferrous materials for manufacturers, contractors, and customers in the recycling industry. With our success-driven approach, purchasers can depend on high-quality materials delivered on time that meet specifications.

What You Will Learn: As a Junior Trader you will learn to monitor metal commodity markets while ensuring availability of product and maximizing returns for the company. This will include collaboration with other members of the management team to develop and implement trading strategies, based on daily analysis of market trends. In addition, you will learn to assess market direction, engage in ongoing dialogue with international customers to identify current and projected needs and negotiate alignment that is valuable for both the Our Junior Trader will have first-hand experience with various business elements such as the dynamics of International Trade, Customer and Supplier Relationship Management. In addition, you learn about market supply, demand, and negotiations outside of a classroom setting, allowing for professional growth. Finally, you will share the values of sustaining the local economy, making a positive environmental impact and being part of an energetic, growing family business. The successful candidate for this unique role will be responsible for supporting buy/sell decisions to customers while strategically developing both internal and external business relationships

What You Will Do: Working directly with the executive trading team, the Junior Trader will have an opportunity to develop a comprehensive knowledge of metals, industry-based marketing strategies and experience international sales. Specific responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Monitor market fluctuations and accordingly adjust commodity pricing through the process of learning and implementing supply and demand calculations
  • Help create a competitive advantage for JRS' trading and supply chain activities, while learning about the products and logistics solutions that the company provides
  • Meet with existing and potential customers to gather and analyze needs and requirements for product, including new business opportunities
  • Research and present recommendations to senior management on new markets and growth opportunities
  • Confidently identify all commodities and materials in the company inventory, or future potential inventory items
  • Coordinate and test product, and determine the value of product based on testing results
  • Negotiate and finalize sales with domestic and international customers
  • Utilize and improve current methods, tools and software used for sales transactions, inventory turnover and company profitability
  • Manage the freight and shipping of products in conjunction with operations and logistics teams
  • Record and report sales and material volumes, contract statuses and inventory forecasts
  • Create and execute monthly sales plans to ensure ongoing communication with customers
  • Provide analysis and deliver timely sales reporting
  • Manage after-sales service
  • Ensure all queries, and any problems are handled in an efficient and professional manner
  • Hedging, to mitigate risk

What We Require from You:

  • You are currently enrolled in a post-secondary institution, in 4th year or recent graduate of a business degree (International Business, Commerce or Finance)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suites (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Demonstrate strong analytical, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
  • Self-motivated, inquisitive and driven to learn new skills
  • Excellent negotiation skills with a focus on driving results
  • Ability to learn product, product chemistry and international standards to support buying and selling processes
  • Willingness to travel (internationally) to visit mills and buyers to understand the market, available product and demand
  • Exposure or experience in a fast-paced sales environment, considered an asset
  • Familiarity with foreign exchange and/or commodity markets (nickel, copper, aluminum), considered an asset
  • Flexibility in schedule will be imperative, as schedules are subject to change based on various needs in order to cover global market hours
