Your Opportunity
We are looking for a talented Regional Project Controller in the Western Canada area who wants to be part of a purpose‑driven organization that is focused on helping our clients, colleagues, and communities thrive.
This position is an integral part of our Canada West leadership team where you will bring leadership to further strengthen our project controls practice with a team of more than 25 skilled project controls professionals across British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba. You will lead a team of Business Centre Project Controls Leaders, and work in close collaboration with Project Managers and Leadership in our Transportation Business Line to provide project controls support on scope, schedule, and cost throughout the life cycle of our projects. Our projects are multi‑disciplinary in nature and can include some or all of the following project phases: conceptual, preliminary design, detailed design, and construction.
As a project controls professional at Stantec, you will utilize your expertise in financial planning, cost controls, communications, and problem solving in a fast‑paced, professional environment to assist the Transportation Leadership team with project delivery and program development.
Your Key Responsibilities
- Provide leadership for a team of Business Centre (BC) Project Controls Leaders across Western Canada with coaching, strategic input, workload management, and engagement to achieve our project controls objectives.
- Lead business centre project controllers to prepare and process project budgets, forecasts, change orders, and timely monthly invoices.
- Maintain and strengthen project controls best practices that may be specific to the needs of the region and appropriately coordinate the roll out and change management for implementation of new processes and best practices.
- Provide support in budgeting processes for the region including support for the development of the operational budget, along with tracking and reporting to support management of the operational budget throughout the financial year.
- Champion financial management within the region and coordinate with Financial Managers and operations leadership as appropriate.
- Provide reporting, analysis, recommendations for continuous improvement and management support to Leadership, including monthly reporting, financial forecasts and utilization reporting.
- Provide reporting to Business Centre Leadership with regard to ongoing financial matters and be responsible to ensure that timely invoicing and financial reporting is completed.
- Support regional leadership in training of new business centre leaders using standard best practices.
- Support on tracking Regional G&A spending and develop appropriate assessment and recommendations for leadership.
- Interface with project controllers, business centre operating leaders and project managers to review and analyze project forecasts.
- Assist project managers and leadership and monitor the progress of large and complex projects on a regular basis to evaluate potential financial risks and ensure financial health and proper tracking in accordance with standards.
- Review and provide strategic analysis of financial statements and provide commentary on required troubleshooting to improve financial results.
- Support regional activities related to external and internal (SOX) audit processes.
- Participate in governance calls on major projects.
Your Capabilities and Credentials
- Excellent written and verbal communications.
- Ability to multi‑task, manage time, organize, set priorities and make timely decisions to meet internal and external deadlines.
- Possess strong problem‑solving and analytical skills, including attention to detail.
- Self‑motivated, proactive individual with a strong work ethic, capable of prioritizing and communicating to multiple groups.
- Able to adapt quickly to changing work demands without compromising accuracy and quality of work.
- Positive attitude, with the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships.
- Strong understanding of all phases of project controls concepts and ability to communicate ideas to others.
- Thorough understanding of project accounting.
- Understands the importance of systems and processes and how they can best be applied inside each business centre to streamline administrative practices.
- Understands the and types of projects and issues within the assigned region and what strategies can be undertaken.
- Must be proficient in MS Office skills, with advanced skills in MS Excel. Experience with Financial/Cost systems (Oracle, SAP, etc.) is preferred.
- Solid understanding of principles and methods related to Earned Value Management considered an asset.
Education and Experience
- Accounting, business or related degree preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of experience performing financial analysis, cost management and other project controls functions.
- Previous experience in an operational finance leadership role; consulting industry experience would be preferred.
- Position will primarily work in an office setting. Stantec is utilizing a flexible workplace strategy where working from home on a part‑time basis may be permitted.
Pay Range
- Locations Outside of Lower Mainland – BC: Min Salary $94,000.00, Max Salary $141,000.00
- Locations in Lower Mainland – BC: Min Salary $99,600.00, Max Salary $149,500.00
