About the role

Job Description:

Shared Health Manitoba invite applications for a full-time academic Acute Care Service Surgeon to join the Section of General Surgery commencing on July 1, 2025 (or on a date mutually agreed upon).

This is a geographical full-time, contingent position and the successful candidate will be eligible for an appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor (or higher depending on current academic rank) in the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba. Remuneration will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Responsibilities:

The position encompasses inpatient, emergency and ambulatory patient care responsibilities and requires individuals with clinical and teaching skills to further the aims of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, research, and tertiary care medicine. The candidate will be expected to conduct independent research and supervise post-graduate trainees conducting research. The position will be located primarily at St. Boniface Hospital and Grace Hospital, with secondary responsibility at other sites within the region.

The successful candidate should be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Manitoba. Certification in General Surgery by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada is strongly preferred. Additional post-graduate training in education or research would be an asset. Additional skills including advanced degrees would be beneficial; a commitment to education, research and/or other academic pursuits is desirable.

The candidate must be eager to work in a group setting, showing commitment to working in a collegial and supportive manner with the surgeons at the site. The site is hoping to expand its footprint in residency education and build on an already exemplary track record of resident and medical student teaching.

Qualifications:

The University of Manitoba is committed to the principles of equity, diversity & inclusion and to promoting opportunities in hiring, promotion and tenure (where applicable) for systemically marginalized groups who have been excluded from full participation at the University and the larger community including Indigenous Peoples, women, racialized persons, persons with disabilities and those who identify as 2SLGBTQIA+ (Two Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, questioning, intersex, asexual and other diverse sexual identities). All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian citizens and permanent residents will be given priority.

An inclusive, open and diverse community is essential to excellence and fosters voices that have been ignored or discouraged. To address the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences commitment to equity, access and participation, and in recognition of the underrepresentation of members of historically and currently excluded groups, we take proactive measures including implicit bias training for all hiring panels. We strive for diversity and cultural safety throughout the hiring process (hiring panels, short-list of candidates, interviews). The University acknowledges the potential impact that Career Interruptions and Personal Circumstances can have on an applicant's record of research achievement. Measures will be taken to ensure that these leaves will be taken into careeful consideration during the evaluation process. We encourage you to self-identity aspects of your identity that position you to bring currently under-represented viewpoints, expertise and forms of excellence to this role.
