The Position

We are seeking an Occupational Therapist Assistant/Physiotherapist Assistant (OTA/PTA) to join the inpatient brain injury rehab team (BIRT). The brain injury rehab team serves clients aged 3 months to 18 years who require rehabilitation following an acquired brain injury. The goal of the program is to enable children and youth with brain injuries to recover as fully as possible and return to their homes, schools and communities.

As an OTA/PTA on this team, you will be working in a highly supportive environment among a dedicated interprofessional team, with many opportunities, both formal and informal, for professional growth, development and learning. You will deliver both occupational therapy and physiotherapy programs, as developed by the supervising OT or PT.

This is a temporary full-time position (contract ending March 31, 2026).

Key Responsibilities

  • Administers programs developed by the physiotherapist/occupational therapist (PT/OT) to individual clients or groups of clients such as strengthening and ROM exercises, gait training, mobility balance and endurance enhancing exercises
  • Maintains communication with supervising PT/OT
  • Monitors and reports any change or adverse reaction to treatment or prescribed program plan
  • Assists with lifts and transfers from wheelchairs, beds, bathtubs, toilets, etc.
  • Set ups, adapts and instructs clients, families, staff and students on appropriate equipment such as wheelchairs, trikes, bikes and walking aides, etc.
  • Applies and monitors splinting devices
  • Assists clients in preparing for hydrotherapy sessions and administers treatment programs in hydrotherapy sessions
  • Prepares, applies and monitors modalities on request: e.g. cold packs, ice packs, contrast baths, ultrasound, TENS, muscle stimulation
  • On request, is responsible for equipment loaned to client, including ensuring equipment is safe, clean and in good working condition, as well as transporting equipment to clients as necessary
  • Follows through with the ordering of new equipment and supplies as requested
  • Cleaning treatment area and ensuring clean linens are available as needed
  • Documents according to hospital and professional standards
  • Document workload statistics according to the Workload Measurement of the Ministry of Health

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an accredited OTA/PTA college program is required
  • Paediatric experience preferred
  • Experience working with clients and families who have experienced brain injury is an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Demonstrated ability to organize time, manage fluctuating clinical responsibilities and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently under the guidance of the supervising PT/OT
  • Demonstrated initiative and self-direction regarding equipment maintenance, safety and cleaning
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with clients, families and members of the interdisciplinary care team
