About the role
PURPOSE & SCOPE:
Reporting to the Tool Engineering Manager, as a Tooling Designer Co-op Student, you will assist experienced engineers and technicians in the design and development of tools, gauges, fixtures, and equipment essential to the manufacture and testing of powder metal parts. You will gain hands-on experience supporting new product development, and process improvement, while applying your academic knowledge in a real-world manufacturing environment. They must work in a safe and efficient manner and comply with Johnson Electric’s Health & Safety and Quality Systems policies and procedures.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with the design and detailing of tools, gauges, fixtures, and equipment using Siemens NX CAD software under the supervision of senior staff.
- Support product and process development engineers with new tooling development and continuous improvement of existing designs.
- Collaborate with Sales Engineering, Business Development, and R&D teams to help assess the feasibility of new products.
- Contribute to the preparation of design change proposals for new products to support manufacturing feasibility.
- Participate in APQP meetings, problem-solving sessions, and cost-reduction initiatives, providing input from a tooling perspective.
- Stay current with CAD software tools and design standards relevant to the role.
- Support the execution and tracking of continuous improvement projects related to cost reduction, quality enhancement, or customer service.
- Adhere to all safety protocols and contribute to a safe working environment.
- Ensures that the requirements of the Quality Management System and Environmental Health and Safety Systems are met.
- All other duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Education and/or Experience:
- Currently enrolled in a post-secondary Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or related program.
- Strong interest in tooling design, manufacturing processes, and continuous improvement.
- Basic working knowledge of CAD software (e.g., Siemens NX (preferred), Solid Edge or SolidWorks.)
- Strong communication and team collaboration skills.
- Analytical mindset with an eagerness to learn and contribute.
- Ability to follow direction, manage time effectively, and prioritize tasks in a dynamic environment
Qualifications:
- Proven mechanical aptitude and knowledge
- Mechanical Inclination
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Self-starter and takes initiative
- Good interpersonal skills. Able to work well independently or within a team environment
Language Skills:
- Proficient in English (both spoken and written)
Work Environment (including Physical Demands):
- Office and plant floor environment.
- Will require use of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment).
- Exposure to manufacturing equipment and occasional physical activity.
