Clinical Nurse Specialist
About the role
Job Description:
Acute Pain Service has a specialty-based focus and functions in an expanded nursing role, demonstrating a high level of autonomy and expert skill, to formulate clinical decisions and appropriately manage acute pain service patients. You will be part of the leadership team for Acute Pain Service, providing nursing leadership in knowledge-based practice, the development of standards, processes and quality initiatives enhancing the care for acute pain service patients.

Provides leadership in advanced nursing practice through the collaborative management of an independent caseload of patients, families or groups within the acute pains service patient population

Initiates and/or coordinates the implementation of a comprehensive plan of care developed in collaboration with the surgical team, the patient and family, and other multidisciplinary team members as necessary

Evaluates and modifies the plan in response to changes in the patient’s status
-
Develops, implements, and evaluates initiatives that improve patient care quality in Acute Pain Service, in accordance with the strategic goals of the organization and patient and family centered care. This includes a leadership role in quality assurance in Acute Pain Service, leading selected quality activities and administrative duties including committee involvement

Collaborates in the establishment of goals and objectives for the Acute Pain Service Team consistent with the provision of high-quality care

Participates and provides leadership in policy, procedure and program development and evaluation

Develops and maintains standards of nursing practice and management of patient care through the creation of an environment conducive to growth and development of staff and excellence in nursing practice

Interprets and fosters the philosophy, goals, and best practice standards

Performs research activities and initiates evidence-based practice
-
Delivers, coordinates, and participates in education and professional development activities/programs
-
Performs activities to further develop and strengthen the profession including the supervision of students
-
Acts as a resource and serves as a consultant to individuals and groups within the professional community

To engage with research teams as co-investigators in the development of abstracts, presentations and/or publications writing.
Education:
-
Bachelor of science in Nursing required
-
Master of Science in Nursing required
-
Provincial registered body membership required
-
Current registered member in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario required
-
Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) required
-
Current certification in Advance Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) preferred
-
Canadian Nurses Association certification preferred
-
Specialty certificate in an acute specialty (Critical care, emergency, Post operative care preferred)
Experience:
- Minimum of five years current RN clinical practice experience with demonstrated clinical excellence in area of expertise.
- Experience in leadership role with the ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team;
- Demonstrated knowledge of planning, developing, and implementing educational initiatives for health care providers and community members.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform relevant best practices, knowledge integration and skills for the management of complex cases in a variety of care settings.

Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre, located in Barrie, Ontario, provides safe, high-quality care for residents across a large geographical region including Simcoe County and the District of Muskoka. The area is home to more than 450,000 residents, with half of RVH’s patients living outside the City of Barrie.
As the largest health centre in North Simcoe Muskoka, RVH provides highly specialized services, and technology not found anywhere else in the region. This includes the only interventional radiology suites for minimally invasive surgeries, vascular services, advanced stroke care, as well as dedicated trauma rooms in its large Emergency department. RVH is also home to the Hudson Regional Cancer Centre, Simcoe Muskoka Regional Heart Program, Simcoe Muskoka Regional Child and Youth Program and the RVH Regional Renal Program meaning distance is no longer a factor for residents receiving lifesaving treatment.
