##Position Description

The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) serves a diverse population of children, youth, and families by providing holistic, comprehensive care across a wide range of clinical specialties. Guided by a commitment to excellence, innovation, understanding, and hope, the SickKids Department of Psychology is a recognized leader in Precision Child Health. Through the integration of clinical care, research, and education, and grounded in an equity-focused and inclusive lens, the Department of Psychology supports the generation of new knowledge, educates the next generation of specialized psychologists, and addresses the complex developmental, medical, and psychosocial needs of children and youth receiving care at SickKids.

The Department of Psychology, in collaboration with the Suspected Child Abuse and Neglect (SCAN) Program and the Lotus Health Team, is seeking a Clinical Psychologist and/or Neuropsychologist for a part-time contract position. The SCAN Program provides trauma-focused assessment, consultation, and intervention services for children and youth presenting with concerns related to neglect and child maltreatment. Services are delivered within an interdisciplinary model of care that emphasizes safety, healing, and advocacy for children and families. Lotus Health is a multidisciplinary health and advocacy program within SCAN for children and youth who have been exposed to sex trafficking and those at risk. Lotus Health provides a range of trauma-informed medical and psychosocial services and works closely with community partners, including child welfare, police, housing, and other health services.

This unique, two fold role is designed to support the assessment and/or therapy-intervention needs of children and adolescents followed by the SCAN Program and the Lotus Health team. The successful candidate will provide:

  • Psychoeducational and/or neuropsychological assessment and consultation services, and/or
  • Trauma informed therapy and intervention services for children and youth presenting with concerns related to neglect and child maltreatment.

Candidates with experience in both assessment and intervention are strongly encouraged to apply. Additional responsibilities include delivering direct clinical services to a diverse population of children, youth, and families using a healing-focused, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive approach, participating in interdisciplinary case consultation and collaborative care planning, and contributing to program related research and evaluation activities examining service impact and outcomes.

Psychologists within the SCAN Program and Lotus Health work as part of a multidisciplinary team of medical and psychosocial clinicians and collaborate closely with community partners, including police services, child protection agencies (CAS), Child and Youth Advocacy Centres (CYAC), and schools, to support and advocate for clients. Here's What You'll Get To Do

Assessment Related Responsibilities

  • Design and carry out consultations, screening, targeted or comprehensive assessments in order to relate current cognitive, behavioural, and social-emotional functioning to a child's medical, neurodevelopmental, and mental health history.
  • Excel in communicating and documenting assessment results and recommendations within a trauma-informed, anti-oppressive, equity-focused, and strengths-based lens and a patient and family centered approach to care.
  • Write reports with recommendations. Excel in communicating and documenting assessment results and recommendations within a patient and family centered approach to care.
  • Provide feedback to families and clinic teams.
  • Consult with school teams, rehabilitation providers, and other health and educational professionals.
  • Complement and extend the health care team's ability to meet the psychosocial needs of the child and family.
  • Work collaboratively and professionally to support patient care as a member of the interdisciplinary health care team.
  • Actively engage in clinical research being conducted, program development and quality initiatives.
  • Mentor and supervise practicum students, residents, and post-doctoral fellows.
  • Integrate research and clinical practice to ensure ethical, evidence-informed patient care.
  • Work within the Hybrid model of care (Virtual/Onsite).

Intervention Related Responsibilities

  • Working from a healing-focused, trauma-informed, strengths-based, developmentally-sensitive, anti-racist, anti-oppressive perspective.
  • Collaborating on the development, implementation, and evaluation of an evidence-based, trauma-informed mental health model of care for children and youth who have been maltreated, and their families
  • Providing clinical supervision and consultation.
  • Providing crisis intervention, suicide risk assessment, and safety plans.
  • Providing comprehensive clinical case formulation and individually-tailored trauma treatment.
  • Providing advocacy for linkages with internal subspecialties and community resources.
  • Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary health care team and community partner agencies.
  • Interventions include both short- and long-term therapies

Here's What You'll Need

  • A Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology or Neuropsychology from a CPA or APA accredited program or equivalent, with a pediatric/developmental focus.
  • Registration or eligibility for registration with the College of Psychologists and Behavioural Analysts of Ontario, with competency in Clinical Psychology or Clinical Neuropsychology.
  • Training in the clinician/scientist model of care.
  • Post-doctoral training in Clinical Psychology or Clinical Neuropsychology is preferred.
  • Strong proficiency in paediatric psychoeducational and/or neuropsychological assessment and diagnosis of children and adolescents age 4-18.
  • Proficiency in crisis intervention and trauma-informed care.
  • Work experience in child maltreatment and demonstrated sensitivity to children and families where issues of sex trafficking and gender-based violence exist.
  • Knowledge and skill in trauma-focused assessment and treatment modalities.
  • Superior judgement, tact, and diplomacy in interacting with a diverse population.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical, evaluative, and problem-solving skills.
  • Proven ability to prioritize patient care needs in an efficient and organized manner.
  • Outstanding ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge in culturally competent practice, and extensive understanding of the importance of health equity, diversity, and inclusion in the delivery of healthcare services.
  • Exhibited resilience in a range of complex and demanding situations.
  • Ethos of evidence-based care and practice.
  • Competency in using virtual technology for teleconference sessions/virtual care.
  • Proficiency in languages other than English is an asset.
  • Understand importance and demonstrates ability to foster a culture of Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
