Reporting to the Director, Professional Practice & Clinical Support Services, the Academic Clinician, Nursing Research Lead is a career researcher and advanced practice clinician (Nurse Practitioner) who plays a pivotal role in clinical, research and academic leadership at Providence Care Centre. By integrating clinical practice, academic and research expertise, the Academic Clinician, Nursing Research Lead will lead the advancement of evidence-informed nursing practice, and drive innovation and the provision of quality care through education, research and facilitating organizational practice changes.

The Academic Clinician, Nursing Research Lead will act as the most responsible provider (Nurse Practitioner) for a defined group of inpatients and establish a collaborative and team-oriented culture that fosters curiosity as they host an interdisciplinary team of learners. Working both independently and collaboratively as part of the interprofessional team, the Academic Clinician, Nursing Research Lead will provide a full spectrum of patient-centered healthcare services including assessment, diagnosis, management and health promotion to patients, clients and families. They will provide quality care through advanced practice, education, research, leadership and consultation as outlined by hospital policies and procedures and in alignment with the College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards for Nurse Practitioners.

The Academic Clinician, Nursing Research Lead will establish and foster internal and external research collaboration networks with staff, academic and healthcare partners, students, industry, funders and other relevant parties and demonstrate on-going stewardship. They will seek to identify innovative opportunities to conduct research and/or Quality Improvement initiatives that support Hospital operations and programming on a day-to-day basis.  In collaboration with academic and internal partners and relevant parties, this role will oversee and foster a supportive and safe educational environment promoting evidence-informed practice, critical thinking, skill utilization and person-centred care.

Skills And Qualifications Required

  • Master of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner (MN–NP) or an equivalent graduate level Nurse Practitioner qualification
  • PhD Nursing preparation, preferred
  • Current unrestricted registration as a Registered Nurse, Extended Class with the College of Nurses of Ontario;
  • Minimum two (2) years of recent related leadership experience in a healthcare setting required
  • Current CPR certificate
  • Experience in the care of older adults
  • Experience in student supervision
  • Evidence of a research-focused academic record, including publications or contributions to nursing research
  • Two (2) years of experience in coaching and developing research capacity among professionals/clinical learners
  • Adjunct faculty designation with a local academic organization, offering nursing education, preferred

Position Duties & Responsibilities

  • Supports direct reports and educational leaders in optimizing direct clinician education, including nursing skill acquisition, policy and procedures and best practice implementation
  • Develops, manages and evaluates the operations of a service or program and ensures efficient and effective allocation of human, financial, and material resources
  • Oversees recruitment of new staff assigned to the portfolio of this position, working with support from the Director, Professional Practice and Human Resources, to coordinate recruitment, interviewing, hiring and orientation, as needed
  • Manages portfolio expenditures within budget and submits budget reports as required
  • Provides care for a defined group of inpatients in collaboration with the most responsible provider (MRP)
  • Shapes and implements a vision of nursing research and evidence-informed practice (EIP) for Providence Care, translating research into practice
