About Our Opportunity

Reporting to the Director of Public Safety and Policing, you are accountable for providing direct human resource and budget management in the delivery of the broad range of portfolios related to ensure adequate and effective policing services in Nova Scotia, and ensuring planned outcomes are achieved. You manage and lead a team consisting of policing advisors and a project manager.

You are responsible for providing advice, assistance and support to ensure quality service to stakeholders, clients, Department of Justice senior management, and multiple government departments and agencies involved in public safety and policing issues.

Further, you support the oversight and implementation of policing strategies and priorities at the federal/provincial/territorial tables. You oversee, assist and collaborate in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of public safety initiatives, legislation, policies and programs which provide or enhance public safety and security across Nova Scotia.

You represent the Minister and Deputy Minister, ensuring adequate and effective policing is delivered to communities across Nova Scotia, ensuring the development, implementation, and effectiveness of the programs supporting police, renewal of Governance Standards, and approving training for core policing responsibilities. You manage multi-year projects, partnering with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, responding to public inquires, and facilitating policing initiatives across Nova Scotia.

Primary Accountabilities

You are responsible for providing advice, assistance and support to ensure quality service to stakeholders, clients, the offices of the Minister and Deputy Minister, as well as all divisions of the Department of Justice and multiple government departments and agencies, as well as the federal/provincial/territorial community, involved in public safety and policing issues.

You represent the Minister and Deputy Minister, ensuring adequate and effective policing is delivered to communities across Nova Scotia, ensuring the development, implementation, and effectiveness of processes, approving training for policing responsibilities and facilitating additional policing supports. You manage multi-year projects, partnering with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders, responding to public inquires, and facilitating initiatives in partnership with communities.

About You

To be successful in this role, you will have a university degree, such as the social sciences, business, or administration, with several years of progressively more responsible experience in a related field, which includes experience in a leadership or supervisory role, or an acceptable combination of education and experience.

Experience working in a law enforcement field (officer or civilian) will be considered as an asset.

You will have strong leadership skills with effective team-building abilities, including experience developing and training staff. You have strong community awareness, with effective partnering and relationship building to communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including marginalized communities. You will have experience developing policy and procedures, and inspection reviews.

You have a professional approach to responsibilities, effective interpersonal communication, organizational skills and the ability to set priorities, as well as tact and independent judgement.

You are able to work on multiple projects simultaneously, while providing clear direction to your team. Furthermore, you are able to provide strategic advice with limited information.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.
