About You / What We Are Looking For
The City of Coquitlam is hiring a regular-full time and up to two temporary full-time Planner 1’s in the Community Planning Division to support key planning initiatives.
As part of the Community Planning team, this Planner 1 position will be a key team member involved in city-building through the development of long-range planning policies, such as the Official Community Plan and neighbourhood plans. This includes aligning and integrating land use policy with transportation, environment, urban design, zoning, and more. You will research and analyze land use trends and support the development of land use and long range policies that respond to emerging community needs.
This position will work closely with internal departments, external interest holders, and community organizations. Additionally, you will provide technical expertise, conduct research and policy analysis, prepare reports and other materials for Council and senior management, participate in public engagement, work in a collaborative team environment, and contribute to policy development that enhances community livability.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will have a minimum of three years of progressive experience in the planning field, including municipal government, consulting, or related sectors. You will have a strong foundation in municipal land use planning, data and policy analysis, and community engagement.
Eligibility for membership in the BC or Canadian Institute of Planners is required.
The ideal candidate is a detail-oriented professional capable of managing multiple projects, conducting research, analyzing data, and effectively communicating with a diverse range of interest holders. Excellent verbal and written communication skills, the ability to collaborate with internal and external partners, and a proven ability to build strong working relationships with colleagues, consultants, and the public are essential for success in this role.
Preferred Qualifications
A university degree in Community or Regional Planning, Urban Studies, or Community Development is preferred.
Experience in housing, recent legislation changes, and other social issues is considered an asset.
Proven policy development and implementation experience in the following fields will be considered an asset:
- Official Community Plan and Neighbourhood Plan reviews and updates
- Housing affordability, childcare, and social policy development
- Development planning and regulatory processes
- Public participation, community engagement, and consultation processes
- Collaboration with community advisory committees and interest holder groups
What We Offer:
This CUPE position has an hourly rate range of $51.87 - $61.29 per hour (2025 rates). The rate of pay is based on a variety of factors including qualifications, knowledge, experience and skills.

Additionally, there is an opportunity to participate in an earned day off program. This position is based in Coquitlam with some flexible, hybrid work options available.
