The Edmonton Public Library (EPL) is enhancing its Web Communications team and seeking a strategic, collaborative, and user-focused Digital Communications Manager to provide leadership to the web team, strengthen our web and intranet presence and set a clear direction for the future.
Reporting to the Director, Marketing, Communications and Fund Development, this one-year role balances strategic oversight with hands-on digital leadership. You’ll lead EPL’s two main digital platforms, EPL.ca and the staff intranet and lead a collaborative, high-performing team that includes a Digital Marketing Specialist and Web Content Administrator.
You will bring direction, structure, and strategy to EPL’s digital ecosystem, enhancing usability, accessibility, and information architecture, and developing a multi-year roadmap for digital improvement and investment. Working closely with colleagues across Marketing and Communications, IT and other business areas, you’ll ensure EPL’s digital tools deliver meaningful, user-centered experiences for both internal and external audiences.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead and manage the digital communications team, ensuring effective teamwork, high standards of quality, and strong organizational performance.
- Provide guidance and mentorship to team members, helping them prioritize work, build skills, and align with organizational goals.
- Drive strategic leadership and oversee the day-to-day operations and governance of EPL’s digital platforms (EPL.ca and the staff intranet), ensuring strong usability, accessibility, information architecture, design, that deliver seamless, user-centered digital experiences aligned with organizational goals.
- Engage and collaborate with the broader Marketing and Communications team, IT, and other digital product owners to gather input, align priorities, strengthen collaboration, and ensure EPL’s digital ecosystem delivers a cohesive, consistent experience for external users and staff alike.
- Develop and maintain a digital communications roadmap grounded in current state analysis, defining key priorities, improvement areas, and investment opportunities for EPL.ca and the staff intranet to advance organizational goals over the coming years.
- Establish clear digital governance workflows and standards to improve consistency, efficiency, and accountability.
- Use analytics and performance data to track results, identify insights, and guide continuous improvement in design, content, and user experience.
- Lead the planning, delivery, and evaluation of digital communications projects, from concept through to implementation.
- Strengthen EPL’s digital presence through improved site structure, content organization, and search performance (SEO) to enhance visibility and help users easily find the information and services they need.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in communications, digital media, UX design, information management, or a related field.
- A minimum of seven years of proven experience managing web projects and leading comprehensive digital communications in a complex, muti-stakeholder environment.
- At least three years of experience managing and mentoring staff.
- Proven experience developing digital roadmaps and leading website redesign or migration projects in a complex environment.
- Experience implementing and maintaining effective digital governance frameworks to ensure quality, consistency, and accountability across web platforms.
- Strong understanding of UX principles, accessibility standards (WCAG), and digital content strategy.
- Expert knowledge of SEO, analytics, and performance measurement tools such as Google Analytics (GA4).
