McGill University is seeking a Senior Analyst specializing in artificial intelligence and data analytics to support researchers across a wide range of disciplines in the effective use of advanced computing and machine learning techniques. Reporting to the Director of Research Software within the Office of the Vice-President, Research and Innovation (VPRI), the incumbent will be employed by McGill University and work operationally within Calcul Québec.
Based at the McGill High Performance Computing Centre (“HPC Centre”), the successful candidate will join a vibrant, distributed team of HPC analysts, research software specialists, and scientists supporting advanced research computing (ARC) across Québec and Canadian institutions.
McGill University is a founding member of Calcul Québec, a consortium of Québec universities whose mission is to provide state-of-the-art advanced research computing infrastructure and expertise to the research community. More than 600 research groups rely on Calcul Québec’s services to conduct research in diverse fields. McGill University and Calcul Québec are members of the Digital Research Alliance of Canada, the national organization coordinating advanced digital research infrastructure (DRI) in Canada.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support researchers in their use of advanced research computing resources, including high-performance computing, data-intensive platforms, and AI-enabled systems.
- Provide domain-specific support to researchers working in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data analytics.
- Enable researchers from different disciplines to apply appropriate machine learning and data-driven methods to their research problems.
- Develop and deliver AI-related technical documentation, tutorials, and training activities adapted to the needs of diverse user communities.
- Advise researchers on available computing resources, software stacks, tools, and best practices, and provide hands-on guidance as required.
- Install, configure, and maintain relevant software packages and research environments on HPC infrastructure.
- Liaise closely with the research community to understand evolving computational and AI-related needs.
- Contribute to service development and knowledge sharing within Calcul Québec and the broader Alliance ecosystem.
Assets:
- Experience working in an academic research environment.
- Experience with data-intensive or big data tools (e.g., Spark, Hadoop, distributed data processing frameworks).
- Experience using open-source model ecosystems such as Hugging Face (Transformers, Datasets, Accelerate).
- Experience using or supporting supercomputing or GPU-enabled clusters.
- Experience with data preprocessing, cleaning, and reproducibility practices.
- Familiarity with national or international research computing infrastructures.
- Knowledge of responsible AI practices, including model evaluation, bias considerations, and data governance.
- Other programming experience
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities:
- Master’s degree in a research-oriented field or equivalent hands-on experience applying machine learning and data analytics techniques in a research or applied context.
- Hands-on experience working with Linux - advanced level.
- Experience programming in Python - advanced level.
- Practical experience working with large language models (LLMs) in research or applied settings.
- Familiarity with GPU-based training and inference, including distributed training strategies.
- Experience with modern AI and machine learning frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, JAX).
- Good command of French and English, both spoken and written.
- Strong communication skills, both spoken and written.
- Demonstrated ability to perform problem identification and perform issue resolution in a complex technical environment.
- Strong client-service orientation and commitment to researcher success.
- Ability to work effectively within a distributed, collaborative team.
- Ability to manage competing priorities.
- Demonstrated experience with preparing and delivering technical training or workshops. Demonstrated aptitude for learning new technologies.
