The Academic and Technical Writing Program (ATWP) at the University of Victoria invites applications for the position of Associate Professor with tenure or Professor with tenure, and Director of the Academic and Technical Writing Program. Rank and status of the appointment will be determined in accordance with the Unit Standard of the Program and the provisions of the Collective Agreement. The effective date of the appointment is 1 July 2026.

The candidate's qualifications, experience and overall market demand will determine a candidate’s final salary offer. The salary for this position includes a competitive salary range of $130,000 - $160,000 . UVic is committed to offering an equitable and competitive salary, inclusive of a generous benefits package, eligible leaves and pension plan.

Duties include research, teaching, and service, as well as administrative service as the Director of the Program for a 5-year term starting 1 July 2026. Essential Criteria

  • PhD in a relevant field with specializations in one or more major areas of study in Writing Studies and/or Rhetoric and Composition;
  • Experience as a Writing Program Administrator (WPA) or administering required writing courses both for WAC (Writing Across the Curriculum) and WID (Writing in the Discipline) courses. Essential administrative experience includes enrolment management, transfer and assessment data collection, mentoring of faculty and sessional instructors, supervision and development of administrative staff, budget management, collaboration with campus governance and community partners as well as oversight of program governance;
  • An active research agenda in Rhetoric and/or Writing Studies or related discipline as per CCCC guidelines;
  • Experience with and support of teaching that prioritizes student well-being and the success of students (including first-generation students and individuals from historically marginalized populations);
  • Experience leading the implementation of institutional commitments such as Indigenization, decolonization, anti-racism, equity, diversity, and inclusion, and/or climate justice.
  • Experience with and/or demonstrated interest in the use of digital technologies (including AI tools) in relation to writing and composition

DESIRABLE CRITERIA

  • A strong commitment to the continuing development of Writing Studies as an academic discipline in Canada, such as representing the program on and off campus as appropriate;
  • A scholarly focus on writing program administration, programmatic assessment, curricular design, writing pedagogy, or related area;
  • Experience chairing or serving on an appointment, reappointment, tenure, and promotion committee;
  • Experience with or interest in working in a multi-union environment.
