Nestled within the beautiful Rocky and Purcell Mountains, in the southeast corner of British Columbia, the East Kootenay region is a four-season destination. The region boasts unlimited year-round outdoor recreation including skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking, canoeing, golfing, boating, hunting, fishing, wildlife viewing, mountaineering, white-water rafting, and snowmobiling. The Regional District of East Kootenay (RDEK) serves over 60,000 permanent residents and about 25,000 to 30,000 seasonal residents. The region is home to several diverse communities, including several unincorporated communities; eight municipalities, and four First Nations communities.

Reporting to the Deputy Chief Financial Officer (“DCFO”), the Accounting Manager position provides general accounting services and grant administration and prepares operating and capital budgets and tax requisitions. This position includes the supervision of various staff in the Finance Department. The work performed requires significant knowledge of local government accounting principles along with firsthand experience in maintaining a computerized financial management system. The employee in this position exercises considerable independent judgment and initiative within a framework of established policies and procedures. The Accounting Manager position is based out of the Cranbrook, B.C. office.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Undergraduate Degree in Accounting or Finance.

  • Chartered Professional Accountant Designation; consideration will be given to individuals actively pursuing designation.

  • Minimum of three years of full-cycle accounting experience, including year end adjusting entries and procedures, budgeting, analysis, and financial reporting.

  • Regional District experience considered an asset.

  • Possession of a valid British Columbia Driver’s Licence.

Key Skills & Abilities:

  • Thorough knowledge of theLocal Government Act,Employment Standards Act, and other statutes and regulations related to the work performed.

  • Demonstrated competence with computerized financial management systems; including, Great Plains, Microsoft Management Reporter, Tempest, HRISmyWay, Questica, eScribe, Microsoft Outlook, Word and Excel.

  • Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles for local government.

  • Experience in drafting grant agreements.

  • Thorough understanding of accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll processes/legislation, subledgers and fund accounting.

  • Good organization and time management skills. Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize workloads according to deadlines.

The RDEK offers a great work environment and an attractive total compensation package, which includes a competitive salary, and learning opportunities. This is a temporary, full-time (35 hours per week) exempt position with an annual salary range of $88,142.60 to $114,987.60, with up to an additional 180 hours of compensation annually ($96,860.00 to $126,360.00).
