Our Environmental Services Group (ESG) provides our clients with expertise in climate change, environmental assessment & management, noise & vibration, social impact management, sustainable development design, and water resources. With your help, we can build extraordinary things that co-exist, and benefit local communities and habitats.
We are currently looking for an Environmental Monitor with experience in construction for an onsite role. This person will join Hatch's Environment & Sustainable Development team in the Fredericton office. The candidate should be familiar with the supervision of works and the performance of environmental monitoring on construction sites, as well as familiar with provincial and federal environmental regulations. They should also be familiar with environmental permit application processes in New Brunswick. This person will be called upon to work on a semi-remote site, North of Fredericton.
The selected candidate will have good interpersonal skills in order to intervene with contractors with a view to continuous improvement and to correct non-conformities if necessary. They will also be comfortable building and maintaining lasting relationships with colleagues and our clients.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
Reporitng to the Onsite Environmental Lead, the Project Onsite Environmental Monitor is responsible for:

Undertaking regular site Inspections (daily), and other Performance Assurance activities such as independent monitoring for quality and verification.

Supporting validation activities for internal project authorizations of contractor environmental controls being in place, prior to work start.
-
Assuming the responsibilities of the Environmental Lead, if required.
-
Updating and modifying the Environmental Management Plan (EMP) to reflect changing environmental requirements or priorities, as required.
-
Reviewing Contractor – Specific Environmental Protection Plans (C-SEPP).
-
Ensuring that the EMP and all C-SEPPs are adhered to in accordance with legislation and environmental goals of the project.
-
Oversee the development of environmental orientation training to all personnel on site.
-
Directing quality assurance of environmental monitoring performed by contractors.
-
Managing internal Project permitting (e.g. Land Disturbance Authorizations forms).
-
Coordinating wildlife sweeps, surveys, or searches, when required.
-
Assisting in Environmental Incident reports and investigations.
-
Undertaking targeted compliance inspections.
-
Ensure that the work complies with the regulations and laws in force as well as with the commitments resulting from environmental authorizations and permits;

Participate in site meetings;
-
Write reports of environmental non-conformities and follow up on corrective actions;
Desired profile
-
Education in engineering or environmental sciences is an asset (technical or bachelor's degree); Masters is considered an asset.

Experience in water quality sampling and monitoring, is considered an asset.
-
Experience in wildlife monitoring, and biology is considered an asset.
-
5+ years of relevant experience in environmental and regulatory management of construction sites;
-
Experience with wind energy and/or linear projects, is considered an asset.

Experience in working with engineering consulting firms or as a contractor is an asset;
-
Ability to work in integrated teams across multiple disciplines;
-
Attention to detail and good organizational skills;
-
Positive attitude and desire to learn new skills;
-
Great motivation to work both independently and as part of a team;
-
Fluency in French is considered a asset, but not a requirement.

Working knowledge of English (oral and written), including communication with clients and colleagues in other provinces.
