Description What you’ll be doing
Gift Shop Attendant Volunteer Partners Community Health (PCH) is a not-for-profit, charitable organization focused on bringing healthcare services together around the needs of people living in Mississauga and West Toronto. PCH manages Wellbrook Place, two state-of-the-art Long Term Care homes (Wellbrook Place East and Wellbrook Place West) and Seniors’ Hub at 2180 Speakman Drive in Mississauga. The homes have a combined 632 beds and are a part of PCH’s larger strategy that introduces innovative and inclusive programs and services and new models of care delivery.
Purpose: To provide friendly, reliable service and support the daily operations of the on-site gift shop. Gift Shop Volunteers not only help raise funds for resident programs but also serve as a warm and familiar point of social contact for residents. Through conversation and interaction, volunteers help create a welcoming, inclusive space that supports resident wellbeing and a sense of community.
Available Shifts: 10:00am to 1:00pm
1pm to 4:00pm
Commitment: Volunteers are asked to commit to a minimum of 80 hours of service, ideally served through consistent weekly shifts. We value long-term relationships and encourage volunteers to pace their service over several months, rather than completing hours in a short period. This helps build trust with residents and contributes to a more meaningful and rewarding experience for everyone involved.
Responsibilities:
- Greet and assist customers – including residents, family members, staff and visitors – in a warm and respectful manner;
- Offer friendly conversation to residents who visit the shop, recognizing that for many, this is a meaningful social experience;
- Operate cash register and point-of-sale system (training provided);
- Restock merchandise and maintain clean, attractive displays;
- Monitor inventory levels and report supply needs;
- Open and close shop as scheduled;
- Promote positive and inclusive environment for customers of all abilities;
- Adhere to safety, infection prevention and cash handling protocols.
Qualifications:
- Must be 18+ years old;
- Friendly, patient and socially engaging personality;
- Comfort and interest in conversing with older adults, including those living with dementia;
- Reliable, punctual and able to follow procedures independently;
- Basic math skills and willingness to use point-of-sale system (training provided);
- Respect for confidentiality, safety and organizational policies.
Training Requirements: Preboarding (online learning)
In-person Volunteer Orientation session
Three training shifts under the supervision of experienced staff or volunteers
Ongoing guidance and support from Volunteer Coordinator
Accountability: This role reports to the Volunteer Coordinator.
