Type: Replacement
Duration: Up to 12 months
Operational Leadership Summary of Qualifications, but not limited to:
- Leads and direct day to day operations to ensure the efficient operation of the Pathology Lab and lobby lab/core lab if required
- Prepares work schedules according to hospital policies
- Checks the attendance and punctuality, report absenteeism, lateness and other irregularities to the lab manager
- Re-allocates staff as necessitated by absenteeism to ensure that all shifts operate smoothly
- Problem solving - interdepartmental, in house, referral laboratories and acts as a liaison between the clinics and the laboratory
- Compiles both daily and monthly statistics and monthly reports
- Reviews quality assurance records to monitor staff compliance
- Maintaining Accreditation Canada Diagnostics requirements compliance
- Assists Laboratory Manager to write /revise procedures and protocols
- Observes and understanding WCH and departmental policies and procedures, adhering to WCH and departmental mission and vision statements while maintaining patient confidentiality;
- Provides collection requirements or other guidance to laboratory and clinical staff when requested
- Prepares payroll
Education And Safety
- Trains new and current staff in the pathology lab, lobby lab and core lab for initial or refresher training
- Monitors Medical Laboratory Assistant compliance of the technical procedures and assists Laboratory Manager in competency assessments
- Monitors and addresses occupational health and safety concerns for the area. Attend hospital safety meetings as instructed
- Has knowledge of Hospital Information System and other applicable software programs
- Trains staff on the Hospital Information System
- Assists in the planning and mapping of test codes in the Hospital Information System
- Periodically monitor and test staff knowledge of fire, evacuation and technical procedures
- Maintains and updates procedure manual in the pathology lab ,lobby lab and core lab
- Coordinates with research studies
Procurements And Technical Functions
- Orders and maintains stock, supplies and equipment maintenance
- Inventory control including assessment, receiving, storage and supply management
- Performs phlebotomy, ECG and other technician duties
- Collects, label, package and process specimen
- Updates patient information, document all patient records and verify patient demographics
- Provides customer service to patients, staff and other healthcare workers
Qualifications
- Completed post-secondary program at an officially recognized community college or technical institution related to Medical Laboratory Assistant Program; additional related post-secondary education preferred
- MLPAO and/or CSMLS certification required
- 3 years’ experience as a Medical Laboratory Assistant is required; in hospital environment and pathology lab preferred
- Knowledge of Transportation of Dangerous Goods required
- Thorough knowledge of the theory and practices of all laboratory’s procedures,
- Experience with staff scheduling and task assignments an asset
- Customer service orientation and interest in innovation for patient care required skill set
- Excellent communication skills and the ability to deescalate and provide a positive patient experience
- A commitment to providing the highest level of empathy and customer service to diverse and vulnerable/marginalized populations and support for the hospital’s equity and diversity
- Professional behavior and communication that meets the standards of the professional regulatory college or association, as applicable, and the standards of Women’s College Hospital
- This position plays a critical role in acting as an advocate for safety and will demonstrate principles, practices and processes that will optimize a safe environment for all
