Description

SSE Operations Staff within the Schulich School of Engineering is currently seeking a Full-time Limited Term Afternoon Machinist & Laboratory Technician for approximately 9 months.

This successful candidate will report to the Senior Manager of Technical Services and will be a member of the Technical Services Team providing support to academics, students and staff.he primary responsibility of this position is for the safe and proficient operation of undergraduate teaching laboratories, maker spaces, course projects, and technical co-curricular activities. This position provides technical support, technical advice, related Makerspace activities, training and mentorship to the Undergraduate body.

This position hours are Monday to Friday, 1:30pm to 9:00pm. This position directly supports evening student lab and machinist activities.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):

  • Support the creation of new design projects for courses.
  • Significantly engage in the development of new and updating of existing course laboratory experiences.
  • Provide input in the planning, development, and monitoring of new experiments in laboratories and undergraduate projects.
  • Support activities in the Schulich School of Engineering Makerspaces.
  • Support engineering teams and clubs engineering design and construction.
  • Set up of equipment and experiments in the engineering undergraduate laboratories.
  • Provide practical instruction in engineering undergraduate laboratories and projects.
  • Acquire, maintain, upgrade, or replace laboratory equipment to ensure that equipment is in working order and setup prior to scheduled laboratories.
  • Maintain efficient, safe, well-organized laboratories and projects for students.
  • Ordering and inventory of laboratory materials and supplies.
  • Schedule and coordinate inventory and disposal of capital equipment.
  • Chemical inventory and disposal of hazardous waste.
  • Maintain knowledge of current and future technical trends and developments within industry and apply the knowledge as appropriate.
  • Configure, maintain, and operate specialized area equipment including testing systems and instruments; laboratory apparatus; and associated infrastructure including computer operations, electronics, data acquisition systems, computer control for laboratory systems.
  • Aptitude and ability to operate appropriate area tools and equipment as required.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, fire, and health regulations in the laboratories.
  • Maintain and update laboratory hazard assessments and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) manuals on a regular basis.
  • Respond to malfunctions and emergencies.
  • Provide back-up to other SSE technical staff team members as required.
  • Participate in training opportunities.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Requirements:

  • An engineering degree in Mechanical Engineering is preferred, or machining technologist certificate or other applicable certificates that ensure the ability to perform machinist work.
  • Strong hands-on experiences and skills, including mechanical aptitude and ability.
  • Experience in domain related digital technologies, computing, electronics, and instrumentation.
  • Extensive knowledge and application of all types of machining and fabrication is required.
  • A strong understanding of related curriculum and an ability update laboratory experience.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory testing and analysis techniques.
  • The ability to manage multiple projects and priorities effectively.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Exceptional analytical, communication, organizational, and technical skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and analytical skills and excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary.
  • Ability to perform with intense visual concentration, high dexterity, and high physical/manual activities (e.g. lifting up to 25 kg/55 lbs).
  • A valid Class 5 driver¿s license (cannot be a graduated license) with proven good driving record (abstract required).
  • Experience with product design process as it relates to mechanical engineering design projects.
  • Experience with materials testing procedures.
