We are seeking an experienced and motivated Joint Use Design Specialist to join our Planning & Engineering team. Reporting to the Head of Planning & Engineering, this role is central to the design and planning of Valley Fiber’s network builds.
The Joint Use Design Specialist goes beyond the core Designer role by providing full end-to-end design solutions, reviewing complex builds, mentoring team members, and supporting continuous process improvements. This position works closely with internal teams and external stakeholders to ensure every design reflects constructability, safety, and efficiency.
Key Responsibilities:
- Coordinate Manitoba Hydro projects from design through execution, including materials, budgeting, and communications
- Handle fund estimates and requests, focusing on ROI, cost-per-unit, and long-term value for Valley Fiber
- Drive projects forward by balancing timelines, priorities, resources, and cross-team collaboration
- Communicate proactively with internal and external stakeholders to keep alignment across teams
- Support the PMG team with on-site changes for commercial projects, improving documentation and record-keeping practices
- Review complex designs to ensure quality, compliance, and accuracy
- Provide training, mentorship, and technical guidance to junior team members, helping them grow and build confidence
- Lead fielding and constructability reviews with minimal supervision
- Collaborate with the Production team to integrate safety into all designs
- Identify material needs, evaluate market options, and recommend alternatives
- Align design outputs with Valley Fiber’s strategic goals and leadership expectations
- Deliver accurate design packages to downstream teams, including Production and Contractors
- Follow established design processes and contribute feedback for continuous improvement
- Manage all aspects of Planning & Engineering commercial permits, ensuring documentation is clear, complete, and build-ready
- Support allocations, permits, and relocation projects as needed
- Act as the go-to problem solver for complex projects
- Identify opportunities to optimize workflows and improve efficiency in processes
- Work with the Sales team to define and refine service scopes for commercial projects
- Establish improved documentation standards across commercial projects to make records easier to access, audit, and update
- Assess potential impacts of pole relocations (Juta) on CommStream network infrastructure and coordinate to prevent service disruptions
Qualifications:
- Previous experience in network design or the telecommunications industry
- Proficiency in QGIS, AutoCAD, and related GIS software
- Solid knowledge of engineering principles, construction methods, and material specifications
- Experience mentoring or training team members
- Fielding and constructability assessment experience is an asset
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license
Skills & Attributes:
- Strong understanding of design processes, standards, and best practices
- Excellent problem-solving, organizational, and multitasking skills
- Clear and confident verbal and written communication abilities
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to producing high-quality work
- Knowledge of Valley Fiber’s systems, processes, and strategic direction is an asset.
