About the role

Edmonton Islamic Academy is seeking a reliable, safety-focused, and proactive Building Operator to oversee the day-to-day operation, maintenance, and repair of our school facilities. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, the Building Operator is responsible for ensuring that all building systems operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable regulations. This role plays a vital part in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming learning environment for students, staff, and visitors while supporting the school's operational excellence.

Key Responsibilities

Building Operations & Maintenance

Operate, monitor, and maintain all building systems, including: HVAC, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning Mechanical and electrical systems Plumbing systems Fire protection and life safety systems Building Automation System (BAS/BMS) Monitor building performance to ensure occupant comfort, energy efficiency, and system reliability. Respond promptly to maintenance requests and operational concerns. Preventive & Corrective Maintenance

Perform scheduled inspections and preventative maintenance using the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS). Conduct routine maintenance including: Filter and belt replacement Minor plumbing and electrical repairs Lighting maintenance Carpentry and hardware repairs Painting and touch-up work General upkeep of mechanical rooms and school facilities Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate major repairs with approved contractors. Safety & Regulatory Compliance

Ensure compliance with applicable building codes, occupational health and safety legislation, and organizational policies. Conduct routine inspections of school buildings, grounds, parking areas, and playgrounds to identify maintenance or safety concerns. Support emergency preparedness by assisting with fire drills, maintaining emergency procedures, and ensuring life safety systems remain operational. Report hazards, incidents, and deficiencies promptly.

Contractor & Facility Coordination

Coordinate and supervise contractors performing maintenance or repair work. Verify work quality and ensure compliance with safety standards and contractual requirements. Maintain positive working relationships with school staff, service providers, and vendors.

Work Order & Asset Management

Maintain accurate maintenance records using the CMMS. Complete work orders in a timely manner. Maintain inventory of maintenance supplies, tools, and replacement parts. Assist with annual maintenance planning, budgeting, and long-term asset management.

Seasonal & Emergency Support

Assist with seasonal building operations, including snow removal coordination, seasonal start-up/shutdown procedures, and special school events. Participate in an on-call rotation and respond to emergency maintenance situations when required.

Qualifications

Technical diploma or trade certification in Building Operations, HVAC, Power Engineering, Electrical, Mechanical, or a related discipline is preferred. Building Operator or Power Engineering certification is considered an asset. Minimum 3–5 years of experience operating and maintaining commercial, institutional, or educational facilities. Experience with Building Automation Systems (BAS/BMS) and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS). Strong knowledge of HVAC, electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and fire protection systems. Valid Class 5 driver's license.
