Description The Division of General Surgery in the Sprott Department of Surgery at the University Health Network and the University of Toronto is inviting applications for the position of an Academic Hepatobiliary Surgeon. This appointment is for a full-time faculty position in the Division of General Surgery at University Health Network. The candidate must be eligible for appointment at the University of Toronto under the academic rank of Assistant or Associate Professor. The potential start date of this position will be July 1, 2026, but can be flexible depending on candidate.
The Division of General Surgery is seeking a highly motivated and academically driven Surgeon Investigator with a clinical focus in Hepatobiliary Surgical Oncology. The successful candidate will be expected to provide comprehensive elective clinical care in Hepatobiliary Oncology Surgery, including participation in the division’s on-call schedule for emergency general surgery coverage. Responsibilities also include holding regular outpatient clinics to support continuity of care for hepatobiliary surgical patients. The candidate will work collaboratively within an established team and be actively engaged in supporting high-quality, patient-centred care. The candidate will lead innovative research and educational initiatives that advance the field of Hepatobiliary Surgery.
The successful candidate will be a surgeon-investigator who is interested in leading research initiatives focused on clinical Hepatobiliary surgery, clinical trials, education and/or quality improvement. A graduate degree (Master’s or PhD) is required. Evidence of excellence in teaching, research productivity, distinction, and the potential to become an international leader is essential. All candidates must be proficient in English.
The candidate must have completed a residency program in general surgery as well as a Hepatobiliary Surgery Fellowship (or equivalent). The candidate’s application should demonstrate outstanding technical skills, the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and to teach trainees at all levels.
The candidate must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario.
Start-up educational support and mentoring will be provided. The salary will start in the range of $500,000 (CAD) and commensurate with qualifications and experience which will be based on fee for service billings and the support from the University Health Network Division of General Surgery practice plan.
The University Health Network is comprised of the Toronto General Hospital, Toronto Western Hospital, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre, the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, West Park Healthcare Centre and the Michener Institute of Education and is Canada’s largest and leading clinical and research hospital. The University Health Network is an academic institution affiliated with the University of Toronto and is recognized internationally for excellence in patient care, innovation, research and education. The Division of General Surgery is currently comprised of twenty-seven full-time surgeons, eight of whom are hepatobiliary oncology or transplant surgeons.
