The Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC) works in collaboration and partnership across Primary Care Alberta and with all external partners to support innovation and improvement in Indigenous Health and to work towards health equity for Indigenous peoples and communities. The IWC has a significant opportunity to improve the health of Indigenous Peoples in Alberta by focusing on upstream efforts and health equity, creating and building on community empowerment and action, and transforming health service delivery to address racism and focus more on determinants of health and prevention. The IWC is the mechanism through which PCA plans to achieve on-going provincial improvement in Indigenous health, patient outcomes and experience, health improvement and sustainability of Alberta’s health system.
Description:
The Indigenous Wellness Core (IWC) has a significant opportunity to improve the health of Indigenous Peoples in Alberta by focusing on upstream efforts and health equity, creating and building on community empowerment and action, and transforming health service delivery to address racism and focus more on determinants of health and prevention. The IWC is the mechanism through which PCA plans to achieve on-going provincial improvement in Indigenous health, patient outcomes and experience, health improvement and sustainability of Alberta’s health system. The IWC will engage interested parties in AHS and across its partners to support innovation and improvement in Indigenous health and health care. Evidence-informed, sustainable health and health care will be their individual and collective goal. Reporting directly to the Program Lead, the Research Associate will support the IWC in the achievement of the goals and objectives of the IWC. Working within a multi-disciplinary team, the Research Associate will work collaboratively with project team members to successfully support the planning, implementation, and evaluation of research projects occurring across IWC’s Strategic Directions. The role will support practical research engagement on-site (e.g. assisting with a community-level Knowledge Translation events, land-based research activity or community research engagement meeting/s) or by distance (e.g. environmental scan or literature review for a proposal), under the supervision of the Scientific Office of the IWC. This position will advance IWC’s research goals (aligned with the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences’ health research evaluation framework), specifically to advance knowledge (knowledge generation and mobilization); build research capacity; inform decision-making; impact health; and create broad economic and social impacts.

Required Qualifications:
The Research Associate will hold a Master’s Degree in a health-related field and bring a minimum of three years’ experience in a health promotion or population health-related field.
Additional Required Qualifications:
Experience with quantitative and qualitative research methodology in Indigenous health and/or public health research Demonstrated skills and experience in research methods, particularly quantitative research methodologies and bio-statistical analyses, strong technical writing skills and ability to translate complex scientific evidence for informed decision making. At least two years’ experience working with statistical analysis software (SAS, Stata or SPSS preferred). Firm understanding of research design and methods. Self-directed with strong analytical skills, attention to detail, with an ability to handle multiple tasks. Excellent interpersonal and team skills. Strong written and oral skills for the use in the development of oral presentations, summaries, reports, journal articles, systematic literature reviews, and manuscripts, etc. Knowledge of social determinants of health and associated modifiable risk factors, including strategies and best practice evidence. Ability to work with high level external and internal key stakeholders. Ability to facilitate and participate in working groups and steering committees. Knowledge of project management methodology in a health care setting. Conflict management expertise focusing on group dynamics and diverse priorities. Experience in literature reviews and synthesis of large amounts of information. Aptitude for building and sustaining complex relationships with key internal and external stakeholders.
Preferred Qualifications:
Strong computer skills and proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets and relational databases. Proficiency in SAS, STATA, SPSS, Tableau. Knowledge of Indigenous Research Methodologies and sensitivity around the culture and health issues of Indigenous people as well as successful experience working in multi-cultural environments. Ability to navigate through PCA systems and processes is an asset.
