Job Description:
Position: Building Maintenance
Union: Unifor Local-2003E
Rate of Pay: $17.94/hourly
Position Purpose summary:
In compliance with the Mission Statement of The Salvation Army Booth Centre, to minister to those in need and other persons affected by homelessness by practical assistance through a demonstration of Christian love and concern. The Building Maintenance will provide a service to residents/clients while interacting in a positive, supportive manner by maintaining the residence in a professional manner providing the clients with a clean, safe living environment.
This is a permanent full-time position with 37.5 hours per week. Flexibility in scheduling is required. The work schedule is determined in consultation with your supervisor and may vary according to requirements of responsibility. Applicable shifts include a ½ hour unpaid meal break.
Shifts: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday to Friday
Accountabilities:
- Role Specific Responsibilities
- Inspect washrooms for signs of damage and report to Environmental Services Manager.
- Inspect building daily for burnt out lights and replace as required.
- Pressure wash walkways and patios on a rotating basis; shovel and salt walkways as needed and requested.
- Perform repairs and maintenance as requested or assigned by Environmental Services Manager.
- Assist Maintenance Coordinator as assigned by Environmental Services Manager.
- As required and as applicable, make suggestions that will improve efficiency, working conditions or procedures to the Environmental Services Director.
- Ensure all duties assigned to shift are completed.
- Health and Safety
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Work closely with security, identifying any safety and security needs.
- Responsible for the following, work in compliance with the Ontario Health & Safety Act and Regulations, use personal prescribed safety equipment and clothing as directed by the employer, report workplace hazards, dangers, injuries or illness, work in a manner as required by the employer, and report workplace injuries or illness.
- Responsible to follow through on all safety and security procedures (including fire) as outlined in the policy and procedures manual.
- Monitor and report regularly any concern regarding adherence to the acceptable health standards and that physical property is maintained, arranging for repairs as necessary.
Perform other position related duties as required.
CRITICAL RELATIONSHIP MANAGEMENT:
Internal:
- Work cooperatively with staff from various Centre of Hope departments.
- Participate in regular staff meetings to review operational effectiveness, changes in policies and procedures, and in-service training.
External:
- Community, clients.
MANAGERIAL/TECHNICAL LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITY:
- This position reports directly to the Environmental Services Manager or designate.
- The Maintenance Worker receives work assignments from the Maintenance Coordinator.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- The Supervisor will set the hours of work and work schedule.
- Some travel is required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Normal hours of work – may vary as per operational requirements and responsibilities and includes a ½ hour paid meal break where applicable.
Normal location of work is at: 281 Wellington Street, London, ON N6B 2L4 and outreach locations.
The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with the Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, exemplifying Christian Standards of conduct.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Minimum Secondary School Diploma.
- Additional training in Facility Services preferred.
- Knowledge of building systems preferred.
- Valid Ontario Class “G” Drivers licence; a copy of a current driver’s abstract that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required.
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention.
- Provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening that is satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion, is required. The screening is secured either through the National Canadian Policy Information Centre (CPIC) or through a local police detachment.
- May require screening through The Salvation Army Abuse Registry.
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- A minimum of one year of prior related experience including general familiarity with maintenance procedures and equipment.
- Demonstrated professional maintenance skills in minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry and painting.
- Capable of operating hand and power tools.
- Develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
Skills and Capabilities:
- Demonstrated ability to use sound judgment when making decisions.
- Excellent organizational skills, ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Demonstrated ability to maintain successful working relationships; and to deal with people in a pleasant, professional and responsible manner.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Maintain confidentiality in all matters pertaining to clientele and coworkers of The Salvation Army London Centre of Hope.
Compensation:
The target hiring range for this position is $17.94 to $17.94 with a maximum of $17.94.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
