IRSS Student Assistant, Immigrant and Refugee Student Services *Term*
About the role
*This is a term position until April 30, 2026*
Immigrant and Refugee Student Services (IRSS) supports immigrant and refugee students during their academic journey to UWinnipeg and beyond, assisting them with university exploration and admissions all the way through to convocation!
Responsibilities:
- Conduct campus tours for prospective students, parents, visitors, student groups and other guests, introducing them to The University of Winnipeg’s facilities and services.
- Accompany the IRSS Coordinator to presentations and visits, both on and off campus, to share personal experience and student perspective with the University of Winnipeg and Immigrant and Refugee Support Services with prospective students.
- Represent Immigrant and Refugee Support Services at events such as Career Fairs, Open House and Future Student Night, alongside the IRSS Coordinator. These events may include site visits to high schools, community groups, adult education centres, etc., and may at times occur in the evenings or on weekends.
- Assist with promotion and execution of events for immigrant and refugee students, to help foster a sense of community by creating a welcoming environment.
- Support the IRSS with monthly and annual activities/events such as the WUSC welcome lunch, the IRSS welcome lunch, and the WUSC Local Co-Chairs training, etc.
- Collaborate with various student groups to promote social cohesion and cultivate a sense of community to foster a positive learning environment that ensure inclusivity.
- The Student Assistant will be responsible for receiving and assessing both prospective and current students seeking assistance with various inquiries. He will refer any walk-in prospective or current students to the appropriate advisors or departments as needed. Remains in contact with the Associate Vice-President, Student Engagement when the IRSS Coordinator is away.
- Lead and organize the IRSS events both Social Valentine (led by the IRSS Society Club) and Yoga at the Axworthy Health & RecPlex.
Qualifications:
- Ability to work approximately 0 – 34 hours per month, until April 30, 2026.
- Must have experience with newcomers, immigrant, or refugee in Manitoba.
- Must demonstrate knowledge of the University of Winnipeg programs and services.
- Knowledge and familiarity of the immigrant and refugee support services and other services within University community would be an asset.
- Demonstrates a sensitivity and understanding of the diverse academic,and ethnic backgrounds of our student population.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
An equivalent combination of education, experience, skills, knowledge and abilities may be considered.
Condition(s) of Employment:
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
- To be eligible for a Student Assistant position you must be a Full-time student. Full-time students shall be defined as a student enrolled in the current academic year in a high school or at the University of Winnipeg in a full-time program of study as defined in the University of Winnipeg General Calendar.
