TEMPORARY FULL_TIME – 35 hours/week – temporary until return of incumbent.
The temporary position supports BC School for the Deaf (Secondary) and the school location and schedule will be determined for the remaining hours. Please note that the temporary hours may decrease during the assignment depending on the incumbent's return.
The Burnaby School District is seeking a skilled, enthusiastic individual who enjoys challenges, seizes opportunities and wants to make a difference, to join our Indigenous Youth Engagement Support team. The successful applicant will mentor and support Indigenous youth to identify and access the necessary district and community support programs providing direct support to students in relation to their individual social, emotional and learning needs.
Duties:
- Provides outreach, mentoring and support when working directly with vulnerable Indigenous youth and their families.
- Works collaboratively with school based staff and District educational teams, as well as community partners by assisting in the design, implementation, delivery and monitoring of targeted intervention/prevention programs and supports.
- Encourages parental involvement in the school and works with school staff and parents to develop plans for students requiring support outside the school environment.
- Advocates for students and families in establishing and following educational plans. This may include attendance at School Based Team meetings as requested by school staff.
- Facilitates collaborative partnerships through district staff and school-based administration to refer students to appropriate agencies and community resources.
Applicants must possess:
- Post-secondary degree in human relations, community and cultural relations or social sciences.
- Two years' experience in community and cultural relations or relevant field.
- Thorough knowledge of Indigenous cultures.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to employ preventative or intervening behavior management strategies.
- Valid B.C. Driver's License (Class 5).
