Intern, Intermodal Development This is a full-time summer internship that takes place from May 11, 2026 to August 28, 2026.
Job Summary The Intern, Intermodal Development is responsible to plan, coordinate, and execute aspects of small-level civil engineering projects and initiatives to deliver and support Intermodal’s capital plan and growth strategy. The position supports the Intermodal Development team to identify and implement business solutions that generate operating efficiencies for Intermodal. The role represents an opportunity to learn about CN’s Intermodal terminals and gain insights into CN’s Consumer Products Supply Chain as goods move across North America from production to final delivery. The incumbent will gain an understanding of data collection and analysis, project management, civil infrastructure design and construction, and developing supply chain solutions as they relate to intermodal transportation.
Major Responsibilities
- Collects field data, assists in data analysis, and prepares reporting documents in aspects related to civil engineering such as: topographic/drone surveying, pavement condition, civil design, and subsurface drainage
- Conduct field monitoring activities in routine technical or operating activities
- Become familiar in reviewing fabrication and construction drawings
- Uses computer software as a tool for solving basic engineering problems
- Assists in the creation of project plans and the identification of project milestones
- Collect, analyze, and interpret fleet data, including maintenance costs, lease costs, and vehicle utilization
- Prepare recommendations to improve the collection of data and data quality
- Perform calculations, data profiling, and assists in data quality review including database analyses, using software such as Excel, databases, and Tableau
Requirements
- Good understanding of engineering and business fundamentals as they apply to engineering problems and projects
- Experience in data analytics
- Ability to learn quickly and to take on new challenges
- Collaborative team player with excellent interpersonal skills
- Have an aptitude for working on multi-disciplinary teams
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Shows critical and creative thinking and problem solving, and brings forward solutions for our toughest challenges
- Travel flexibility and ability work independently in various weather and environmental conditions in a safety critical environment amidst large operating equipment
- Knowledge of Structured Query Language (SQL)*
- Knowledge of Systems Applications and Products (SAP) Business Object 4.2, including Webi and Universe, SAP BW, Tableau, Microsoft BI, and Power BI*
Education
- Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent
- Any experience for these above would be considered an asset
