SUMMARY
The Lead Commercial Overhead Door Technician is a senior, highly skilled technical role responsible for providing advanced hands-on service and technical leadership across the full scope of the commercial door and dock industry. This role is fully capable of independently performing all aspects of commercial door work, including but not limited to overhead doors, pedestrian doors, dock leveler equipment, truck restraints, dock seals, barrier gate arms, sliding gates, operators, controls, Automatic Door Openers Swing and Slide, glass and aluminum doors, revolving doors, glazing, building entry door systems and related mechanical and electrical systems.
In addition to executing the most complex service, repair, and installation work, the Lead Commercial Door Technician acts as the primary technical authority and escalation point supporting Junior Commercial Overhead Door Technicians, Senior Commercial Overhead Door Technicians, and Commercial Door Service Technicians. The role ensures technical consistency, quality, safety, and best practices across all door-related work within the region.
KEY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Independently performs advanced inspection, preventative maintenance, diagnostics, repairs, and installations across all commercial door systems, including overhead and sectional doors, pedestrian and building entry doors, glass, glazing and storefront systems, dock levelers, dock seals/shelters, operators, motors, controls, and automated systems.
- Leads and resolves complex, high-risk, or escalated service calls, including emergency and mission-critical failures.
- Acts as the technical escalation point for all door-related roles, providing hands-on troubleshooting support, guidance, and problem resolution.
- Supports and mentors Junior and Senior Technicians through on-the-job coaching, skills transfer, and best-practice guidance.
- Reviews work orders to determine scope, materials, sequencing, and repair strategies, ensuring compliance with manufacturer specifications and BGIS standards.
- Provides technical input into estimates, scopes of work, service planning, and complex project execution.
- Assists Regional Operations Managers with technical assessments, failure analysis, and solution recommendations.
- Identifies system deficiencies and recommends long-term corrective actions, upgrades, or capital improvement opportunities.
- Ensures all work meets BGIS quality standards, contract requirements, and applicable codes and regulations.
- Demonstrates and promotes a strong environmental, health, and safety mindset by identifying hazards and proactively implementing corrective actions in alignment with corporate and legislated EHS requirements.
- Completes detailed service documentation, including diagnostics, corrective actions, and recommendations, within applicable service management systems.
- Communicates effectively with clients, internal stakeholders, and technicians to clearly explain technical issues, solutions, and risks.
Work Requirements
- Must be able to work shifts, be on-call and be available to respond to emergencies.
- Must be willing to wear personal protective equipment and work in industrial and outdoor environments.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS
- Minimum Education: High school diploma required; formal trades training or certification strongly preferred.
- Experience: 7+ years of progressive, hands-on experience in the commercial door industry, including overhead doors, pedestrian doors, and dock equipment.
- Demonstrated expert-level ability to maintain, troubleshoot, repair, and install complex mechanical, electrical, and automated door and dock systems.
- Proven ability to lead complex troubleshooting efforts and support other technicians in resolving technical challenges.
- Strong understanding of manufacturer specifications, safety standards, and industry best practices.
- Excellent problem-solving, communication, and client-service skills.
Licenses and/or Professional Accreditation
- Valid Drivers license, clean drivers abstract and clean criminal background check required.
- Canadian Door Institute (CDI) certification or equivalent – strongly preferred.
