About the role

We are looking for this role to be based in Toronto but are open to applicants from other cities in Canada and North America within a 3 hour time zone to Ontario.

About the role

Fleet Space Technologies is a leading provider of geophysical sensing for mineral exploration, using Space enabled technology to build the world's best vertically integrated platform for ML driven mineral discovery.

We're building new technology and and looking for a specialist Computer Vision Scientist (you might be called a Machine Learning Scientist or Engineer but specialising in Computer Vision) to pioneer breakthrough imaging technologies that will transform how we understand Earth's subsurface. We are looking for mid/intermediate through to Seniors for this role.

You'll be joining a small team that is building the early stages of this cutting-edge computer vision and AI to revolutionize mineral exploration. This is your chance to work on genuinely unique problems at the intersection of space technology, geophysics, and artificial intelligence - helping humanity discover the critical minerals essential for our clean energy future.

We're looking for someone who thrives on solving complex imaging challenges and wants to see their algorithms deployed in real-world exploration missions from the Australian outback to the lunar surface.

Role Responsibilities

Research and Development:

  • Lead research and development of Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence techniques for extraction of geochemical and geophysical information from downhole, core imagery, and other sample-related imagery
  • Design experiments utilizing new sensing technologies to assist in the development of groundbreaking algorithms
  • Develop techniques for data fusion, integrating multiple modalities and data sources to create comprehensive mineral prospectivity models

Technical Leadership:

  • Design and oversee standards and practices for collection and management of training data sets
  • Lead QA/QC design for image-related upstream and downstream products
  • Actively participate in hardware design decisions to bring in new or improve existing data streams

Implementation and Deployment:

  • Participate in the design and development of data processing pipelines
  • Write unit and integration tests to ensure correctness and reproducibility in code and pipelines
  • Deploy and support ML models in production environments serving global exploration operations

Collaboration and Innovation:

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams of geologists, geophysicists, and data scientists to deliver actionable insights
  • Document and present findings to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Stay at the forefront of developments in Computer Vision, Machine Learning, and Artificial Intelligence

Role requirements:

  • Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, or a related field, with a focus on Computer Vision, Machine Learning, or Artificial Intelligence
  • A minimum of 2 years post graduate experience in Computer Vision Science/Engineering roles
  • Strong experience in classic Image Processing and Computer Vision techniques
  • Deep understanding of color spaces, color transformation, and color calibration
  • Multi-view experience
  • Strong experience implementing, designing, and training modern Neural Networks, including architectures with Attention and Transformers
  • Hands-on experience deploying and supporting ML models in production environments
  • Proficiency in Python and the Python ecosystem (poetry, pip, numpy, scipy, pandas)
  • Experience with deep learning frameworks (PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX)
  • Experience with image processing libraries (OpenCV, scikit-image, PIL)
  • Familiarity with writing unit and integration tests using frameworks such as pytest or unit test
  • Experience with version control systems such as Git
  • Experience designing or utilizing data annotation and augmentation pipelines
  • Strong communication and documentation skills, with the ability to collaborate in multidisciplinary teams

Bonus if you also have:

  • Experience with geology, geochemistry, or geophysics
  • Experience with geology-related datasets
  • Experience with Docker or containerized deployments
  • Experience with hyperspectral imaging or scientific/industrial imaging
  • Experience with CUDA or GPU-accelerated algorithm implementation
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, Azure) or on-premises deployment of ML models
  • Exposure to MLOps tools (MLflow, DVC) and workflow management
  • Experience optimizing models for edge deployment or limited hardware

About Fleet Space

Fleet Space Technologies vision from the beginning was to build technologies to help humanity explore and connect the Earth, Moon, and Mars.

This led us to develop and launch one of Australia's largest constellation of satellites, create our satellite-enabled mineral exploration technology (ExoSphere), and send Australia's first seismic technology (SPIDER) to the Moon in 2026. ExoSphere, our end-to-end mineral exploration solution powered by space and AI, aims to accelerate critical mineral discovery needed for the clean energy technologies foundational to humanity's clean energy future.

As part of Fleet's founding vision, we also apply our technology to innovative solutions for defense and space exploration, including an upcoming mission to the Moon. Headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia, Fleet has rapidly grown to over 160 employees including a growing team in the USA, Canada, and beyond.

We have raised over $200M AUD in venture funding, backed by premier investors including Blackbird, TVG, Grok, and In-Q-Tel including our most recent $150m Series D in December 2024, at a valuation of over $800m.

In 2023 we were recognised by the Australian Financial Review (AFR) as the #1 fastest growing technology company in Australia.

Company Culture

As a company, we are revolutionising the exploration of new worlds with advanced space technology to build a more prosperous future for humanity.
