We are currently hiring a Mine Engineering Technician to join the team at our Underground Salt Mine in Goderich, ON.

Compass Minerals’ Goderich Salt Mine, located 1,800 feet under Lake Huron, is the largest underground salt mine in the world. The mine is as deep as the CN Tower in Toronto is tall. The rock salt produced at the mine is used to keep citizens in North America safe as they travel through winter snow and ice. The salt is shipped to hundreds of communities around the Great Lakes and along the St. Lawrence Seaway. Some of the salt is trucked to the Compass Minerals plant less than 4 kilometers away, to be packaged for distribution and sale at retailers in North America. The salt is also sold in bulk to manufacturers that make plastics, detergents, disinfectants and other important products. Goderich is named Canada’s Prettiest Town and is best known for its stunning sunsets. Goderich is a lakeside community of 8,000 people located approximately 1.5 hours from London and Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario.

How will you contribute to the team?

This position functions within a team of other professionals, and reports directly to the Technical Services Supervisor. The incumbent will assist the Engineering group in scheduling, drafting, surveying, ventilation and ground control.

Perform weekly mine-wide ventilation surveys, diagnose issues, develop and communicate corrective actions.

  • Conduct weekly face advance and drilling surveys of all active headings.
  • Conduct total station surveys to determine actual pillar size and ensure development is online and grade.
  • Complete Mine Plan Map updates using AutoCAD.
  • Filing and maintenance of engineering drawings and documents.
  • Schedule and draft using AutoCAD, required plans to maintain production.
  • LiDAR scanning and processing of data.
  • Install ground control instrumentation in those areas identified in the mine roof and in mine rooms.
  • Make arrangements with mine operations personnel for equipment requirements, and physical installation of the instrumentation station.
  • Perform scheduled ground control measurements of the electronic instrumentation read-outs.
  • Assist engineering department personnel as required.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

What should you bring to the role?

  • Qualified Mine Engineering Technologist or Technician.

  • 3-5 years’ experience preferred in mining.

  • Complete proficiency with Microsoft Office programs is required.

  • AutoCAD, CMMS systems required.

What is the work schedule?

  • This is a Monday-Friday position, 8 hours per day. Overtime as required in order to support a 24/7 operation.

  • This position is expected to work underground.

  • If you do not live nearby, you will be required to relocate. A relocation assistance package is available to those that qualify.
