Job Description

Cando operates a versatile fleet of diesel-electric locomotives and railcar movers used in switching and short line railway operations across North America. This equipment relies on diesel-powered prime movers and electrical generators to supply traction motors with the power needed to move rail equipment safely and efficiently. A combination of mechanical, electrical (relay and contactor systems), and pneumatic systems support their operation, ensuring dependable performance in demanding industrial environments

The Locomotive and Railcar Mover Mechanic/Electrician works independently or as part of a small team to maintain, repair, and service Cando’s fleet of locomotives and railcar movers. This role involves field work and may require travel away from home.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Regulatory inspections of locomotives and railcar movers, diagnose mechanical, electrical or pneumatic defects, make recommendations as to course of action and repair recondition as needed.
  • Perform all unscheduled repairs, scheduled preventative maintenance and repair tasks on locomotives and related Cando Rail equipment in accordance with company standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with the tracking and maintaining of inventory and stock levels.
  • Assist with routine servicing and replenishment of locomotive and support equipment including refueling, sanding, and restocking consumable material.
  • Performing cleaning and sanitation tasks on locomotives as required.
  • Ensure all consumables and supplies are maintained at adequate levels to support uninterrupted operations.
  • Accurately document all inspections, repairs, and maintenance activities; ensure completion of required service logs and records.
  • Develop and implement daily and weekly maintenance schedules to optimize locomotive availability and operational readiness.
  • Maintain cleanliness, organization, and functionality of work areas, service vehicles, and tools to ensure a safe and efficient working environment.
  • Foster strong customer relationships and collaborate effectively with on-site operations teams to coordinate locomotive servicing needs.
  • Lead by example in promoting best practices for locomotive servicing and maintenance; mentor team members to ensure consistent and high-quality service delivery.
  • Perform and support site incident recovery operations.
  • Operate and utilize equipment necessary for repairs and maintenance of equipment.
  • Use hand tools and other equipment effectively and without injury.
  • Be able to work in all weather conditions during day and night shifts, 7 days a week.

Skills, Knowledge, & Abilities

  • Strong ability to independently plan, organize, and prioritize tasks in a dynamic work environment.
  • Solid understanding of materials procurement, inventory control, and basic accounting principles.
  • Physically capable of safely lifting, pushing, and pulling a minimum of 50 pounds and maneuvering around equipment in confined or elevated spaces.
  • Ability to execute assigned workload while meeting all applicable internal and regulatory safety standards.
  • Proficient with general computer applications and adaptable to learning new systems and technologies.
  • Must hold and maintain any required medical clearance, including compliance with drug and alcohol testing.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain required qualifications and Safety Critical Medical clearances which include passing Customer and Cando drug and alcohol screening including pre-employment, post incident, and reasonable grounds testing.
  • Physically fit including the ability to pull self-up and down from railcars on a continuous basis, able to lift and twist air hoses, able to secure rail car brakes, and operate both derails and switches effectively.
  • Knowledge of technology and computer systems with the ability to use MS Office applications and other mandatory railway technology systems.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check.
  • Proficient mastery of both oral and written communications in English.
  • Must be able to obtain and hold an Ontario class D drivers’ license or equivalent.

Education & Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience working in heavy industrial environments and with similar equipment
  • Experience in locomotive electrical and mechanical repairs and maintenance is an asset.
  • Heavy Equipment Technician and/or Electrician with Red Seal certification is an asset.
  • Hold and maintain a valid class G drivers’ license, both class D and forklift license would be considered an asset.
