Purpose of the Role

The Director, Business Development, Business Groups is responsible for providing strategic business development (BD) advice and practical support to practice group stakeholders including developing, executing and managing focused BD business plans and market initiatives to enable revenue growth for the Firm, in alignment with the Firm's strategic plan.

This senior leadership role oversees BD activities for five major practice groups: Corporate and Capital Markets, Financial Services, Tax, Intellectual Property and Commercial Real Estate. The Director will create eminence and visibility for the Firm in the marketplace through conveying practice differentiation to clients and targets, market development activities, including thought leadership, brand positioning, profile building, and rankings improvement.

The position reports to the Chief Client Officer and leads a team of Business Development Specialists and Managers, serving as a strategic catalyst for revenue growth and market positioning across BLG's core business law practices.

Core Responsibilities

Strategic Business Development & Market Positioning:

  • Provide consultative advice and strategic recommendations on all marketing and BD activities across the five practice areas, measuring ROI and driving alignment with the Firm's strategic direction and M&A strategy
  • Develop and execute annual business plans in collaboration with National Business Leaders and Regional Group Managers, and National Practice Group Heads with clear emphasis on revenue growth, profitability delivery, and market expansion opportunities
  • Support the firm's M&A strategy by identifying BD opportunities to leverage transactions for client development, market expansion, and practice growth, while analyzing competitive positioning implications of growth initiatives
  • Conduct strategic research and analysis on key sectors, geographies, major clients, and emerging market trends to inform business planning and competitive positioning
  • Identify and execute thought leadership opportunities to create eminence and visibility for the Firm, driving improved rankings of practice groups and lawyers in the marketplace
  • Develop future sales strategies, manage pipeline opportunities, and ensure client retention and acquisition goals (cross-selling, geographic priorities, market positioning) are integrated across all business plans
  • Facilitate strategic meetings and sector planning sessions to monitor initiatives, track outcomes, and ensure accountability in revenue generation and client strategies

Team Leadership & Operations:

  • Lead and develop high-performing BD team, mentoring BD Managers, Specialists, and Coordinators while serving as ambassador of change to advance the BD function to organizational maturity
  • Facilitate strategic team meetings and cross-functional integration with BD groups (proposals, commercial pricing) and Marketing functions (communications, digital, CRM, creative services, events) to ensure consistent service delivery and integrated approach
  • Manage systems and processes to track, measure, and report ROI results of BD initiatives to National Business Leaders, Group Heads, and Partnership Board, ensuring alignment of all activities to plan and budget parameters
  • Promote utilization of firm's CRM and internal/external tools for data mining, cross-selling, targeting, and competitive analysis while facilitating sharing of strategic BD learning and best practices
  • Support Firm's RFP process through content guidance, lawyer team assignment, and strategic advice while capturing work highlights for marketing materials, website, pitches, proposals, rankings, and league table submissions

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Strategic Leadership & Execution:

  • Proven ability to develop and execute comprehensive business development strategies that drive revenue growth and market positioning in professional services
  • Strong understanding of legal service delivery across the five practice areas (Corporate and Capital Markets, Tax, IP, Commercial Real Estate, Financial Services)
  • Experience in market analysis, competitive positioning, and translating market intelligence into actionable strategies that improve visibility and rankings

Team Leadership & Stakeholder Management:

  • Demonstrated track record of leading and developing high-performing BD teams while fostering collaboration across practice groups
  • Outstanding relationship management and influence skills with senior partners, clients, and C-suite stakeholders
  • Strong coaching, mentoring, and change management abilities with professionals at various levels

Professional Qualifications & Experience:

  • JD or MBA preferred
  • 10+ years of progressive business development experience in professional services or legal services
  • Demonstrated success in revenue growth, BD program management, and budget oversight
  • Experience with CRM systems, BD tools, performance measurement systems, and competitive analysis
  • Strong network within the legal and professional services community
