Reporting to the Manager, the Supervisor, Program Supports and Implementation (Violence Reduction Program) is responsible for overseeing the program’s service navigation as well as the program’s localized, place-based violence reduction plans. The Supervisor supports the advancement of program objectives by liaising with internal and external partners with the goal of reducing gun violence on TCHC property.

What you’ll do

  • Implement service standards and metrics established by the Manager, Violence Reduction Program in alignment with program standards.
  • Supervise a team of unionized staff (Community Navigators) to deliver service that meets program standards.
  • In collaboration with the Manager, Violence Reduction program, assist in labour relations matters including grievances and progressive discipline of staff by issuing letter of expectations, verbal and written warnings.
  • Foster an environment of organizational development among frontline staff; participating in and leading coaching and mentoring activities.
  • Build and nurture a culture of tenant centric performance excellence through communication, coaching and fair/equitable treatment of staff; promoting a safe, respectful, diverse and inclusive workplace.
  • Adhere to established People and Culture policies and procedures.
  • Escalate unresolved or complex issues to the Manager.
  • From a place-and person-based focus, support and supervise staff to work with a variety of stakeholders to develop, implement and monitor plans to reduce violence on TCHC property by developing partnerships, designing and implementing programs and addressing situational and environmental factors that enable gun violence to take place.
  • Support the joint delivery of projects involving interdependence and cross-institutional accountability and meet deliverables in collaboration with project partners, including shared data and financial resources.
  • Attend community meetings and consultations related to gun violence and community safety and engage in regular, informal dialogue with tenants. Incorporate feedback into localized violence prevention plans.
  • Disseminate information and data on violence prevention plans to different business units throughout TCHC, the public and other stakeholders and be accountable to the feedback provided by these parties.
  • Identify tenants vulnerable to violence or actively involved in violence by liaising with other TCHC business units, as well as partners at Violence Prevention Toronto and others. Triage and assign cases to staff for the purposes of service navigation.
  • Support and supervise staff in providing service navigation to 100-150 households with tenants aged 6-17 delivering appropriate and timely violence prevention programs and services.
  • Facilitate regularly scheduled team supervision meetings to discuss case plans and co-develop solutions to challenges.
  • Support the Manager, Violence Reduction Program by providing input to the program’s operational planning process, development, documentation and implementation of business plans, business cases and initiatives.
  • Assist the Manager in the preparation of relevant funding proposals, business cases, report writing and resource development activities in support of program initiatives.
  • Report performance measurement statistics and make suggestions for improvement.
  • Implement process improvement initiatives and demonstrate a strong commitment to improving tenant safety.
  • Adhere to the program budget and ensure service delivery is tied to the budget.
  • Attend inter-divisional and inter-agency meetings and consult with tenants, community partners and other stakeholders to identify situational factors that enable gun violence on TCHC property.
  • Support the regional teams in addressing environmental design factors that enable crime, as identified by Community Safety Unit audits.
  • Support regional teams, the Community Safety Unit and the Community Crisis Response Program in responding to critical incidents and providing trauma-informed stabilization supports to tenants impacted by gun violence.
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by the manager.

What you’ll need

  • A university degree in community development, criminology, criminal justice, social work, sociology, psychology or other related fields. or;
  • College diploma in community development, criminology, law enforcement, social work, child and youth work or related fields.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in violence prevention, social services, health, community safety/development or related area.
  • Community development knowledge and experience with a focus on community safety and gun violence prevention.
  • Knowledge of the root and proximate causes of gun violence, including knowledge of adverse childhood experiences.
  • Knowledge of service navigation and/or case management documentation standards and experience working with service navigation and/or case management records systems.
  • Knowledge of social services and mental health resources in Toronto, including community-based mental health, parenting support, behavioural support, substance abuse, education support and other related programs and services.
  • Understanding of anti-oppression, human rights, equity and recovery frameworks and proven ability to work effectively with a diverse and vulnerable client population
  • Ability to communicate effectively with staff as well as a diverse tenant population in difficult situations and ability to resolve sensitive issues.
  • Strong listening, verbal communication, writing, conflict resolution and presentation skills.
  • Ability to understand complex tenancies and the issues that affect those with social and economic vulnerability, diverse in age, race, sexual orientation, culture and ability.
  • Commitment to providing high quality tenant and customer service.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation including Residential Tenancies Act, Child, Youth and Family Services Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, Human Rights Code and, Labour Relations Act.
  • Experience developing community safety plans and/or localized or place-based violence prevention plans.
  • Supervisory or management experience.
  • Experience working in and/or managing staff in a unionized environment.
  • Knowledge of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) principles.
  • G-License and access to a vehicle is an asset.
  • Ability to communicate in a second language is an asset.
  • Available for periodic evening and weekend work.
