Position Overview

The Planning, Development & Real Estate Department is looking for a regular full-time Assistant Plan Checker 2 (Level 2 Building Official) to join their team.

Responsibilities

You will be responsible for the plan review of residential dwellings, secondary suites, ancillary structures and small commercial buildings to ensure compliance with the provincial building code and municipal bylaws. You will provide information, interpretation and assistance to home owners, contractors and the general public on permit applications, by-law requirements, related regulations and codes. In addition, as required, you may perform related building inspections; inspect the attachment of signs and building canopies to ensure sign bylaw compliance; investigate complaints concerning alleged building regulation violations; prepare related reports and records; and give evidence in Court when required.

Requirements

You will possess a Diploma of Technology in Building or related discipline, or trades qualification supplemented by building code related courses, plus related experience in municipal plan checking and/or in the building construction industry. Ideally you will be BOABC Level II “Qualified” for Building Officials, or enrolled in the Building Official-in-Training Program (BOIT) and on target to be “Qualified” within a required timeline in order to review plans within the scope of work for this position. Additional requirements include a strong knowledge of related bylaws, acts, and regulations, the ability to read plans, surveys, and related material and a Class 5 B.C. Driver’s License. Computer literacy in electronic plan review and administration software, and in MS Excel and MS Word will be considered an asset.

Compensation

$40.74 to $48.09 per hour

(Pay Grade 23 – January 2024 rates)

Hours of Work

The City of North Vancouver currently works on a compressed work schedule of 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday to Friday, with one scheduled day off (Monday or Friday) approximately each three-week scheduling cycle
