POSITION SUMMARY
Reporting directly to the Sncewips Senior Manager, the Language & Culture Programs Coordinator supports the planning, coordination, and reporting of language revitalization and cultural programming delivered through Sncewips. Working closely with the Language & Culture Manager, this position provides logistical and administrative support for workshops, seasonal events, and programs, ensuring programs are well-organized, culturally grounded, and delivered with care.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Diploma in Indigenous Studies, Education, Administration, Language Revitalization or related field
- A minimum of 2 years of experience in a coordination or administrative support role
- A minimum of 3 years of experience managing and executing heritage programs
- Experience supporting Indigenous programming, language revitalization, or cultural events is an asset
- Experience organizing community events and educational programs, preferably in a cultural, language, or museum setting
- Experience working within Okanagan/syilx cultural contexts, including language, captikʷɬ, and traditional knowledge systems is preferred
- Equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered
REQUIREMENTS
- Must be available for occasional evening and weekend programming
- Valid Class 5 driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Valid First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
- Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search with results acceptable to WFN
- Maintains a high level of confidentiality and uses discretion on all matters relating to the affairs of the Westbank First Nation
JOB DUTIES/RESPONSIBILTIES
- Organizes logistics for cultural programs and language initiatives, including scheduling, bookings, supplies, transportation, and materials
- Assists with coordinating community and departmental requests for cultural engagement, liaising with Elders, speakers, and facilitators
- Tracks registration, attendance, and participant feedback for all programs and events
- Coordinates materials preparation for school visits, field trips, and seasonal workshops
- Ensures all programs reflect appropriate cultural safety, protocol, traditional knowledge systems, and inclusivity
- Assists with project budget tracking, purchase orders, and honoraria coordination
- Collects and compiles data for internal reports, grant reporting, and evaluations
- Maintains accurate and confidential records of program participation and spending
- Provides direction to temporary staff or volunteers assisting with specific Language & Culture programs or events, as assigned
- Organizes program-specific materials and resources such as language handouts, cultural teaching kits, and seasonal curriculum tools
- Collaborates with Communications staff to promote programs and share relevant updates
- Collaborates with the Sncewips team to coordinate space bookings, equipment needs, supply access, and other logistics required to support programming
- Works in partnership with other Sncewips team members to support seasonal events and cross-departmental initiatives
- May provide occasional visitor engagement or reception coverage as needed
- Performs all duties and responsibilities in accordance with the Westbank First Nation policies, standards, and procedures, and as assigned by the Sncewips Senior Manager
KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES
- Proficient in nqilxʷcn/nsyilxcn, includes the ability to read and write, with some conversational and comprehension skills
- Strong understanding of Okanagan/syilx culture, language, and history, with a demonstrated commitment to cultural revitalization and respectful community engagement
- Knowledge of Okanagan/syilx traditional knowledge systems, seasonal teachings, and cultural practices, including plant knowledge, oral storytelling, food harvesting/preparation, and ceremonial responsibilities
- Capable of independently coordinating and leading cultural workshops and events, while working collaboratively with the Language & Culture Manager and Sncewips team to ensure effective planning and successful delivery
- Ability to work collaboratively with Elders, Knowledge Keepers, and community members to incorporate traditional knowledge into programming
- Strong research skills with the ability to accurately cite sources and develop language and cultural resources
- Strong organization and multitasking abilities
- Excellent interpersonal and written/verbal communication skills
- High level of discretion, cultural humility, and reliability
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and cloud-based collaboration tools
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team
- Demonstrates a high degree of confidentiality in interpersonal interaction
- Working knowledge of the history of colonization in Canada and its ongoing impact on modern issues affecting Indigenous Peoples
- Working knowledge in communicating with Indigenous Peoples, demonstrating sensitivity and empathy, and awareness of how language choices can influence and impact conversations.
