Reporting to Dean, Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, the Sessional Lecturer will provide instruction to graduate students.

Course Description: UN 0504 - Small Modular Reactors
The course describes the role of the Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) in electricity generation and for special applications in developed and developing countries. Selected types of SMRs that are relevant and considered for implementation in Canada are described in the course. The course covers the most important design features of selected SMR reactors in each group. The course summarizes the physics, thermalhydraulics, fuel and safety characteristics of the selected SMR designs. Comparison of safety improvements, inherent and passive safety features and reactor safety margins for different SMR designs are included.

Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

The primary responsibility of the applicant is to (develop and) teach a theoretically, methodologically sophisticated and relevant course at the university level within the parameters of the course description listed above. In keeping with a technology-enhanced learning environment utilizing laptop computers and wireless connectivity, the Sessional Lecturer will deliver the course using a technology-enhanced learning approach that includes a variety of inclusive teaching and learning strategies and assessments. The course will be delivered in a hybrid format, and the Sessional Lecturer will be expected to deliver the course from the assigned classroom at Ontario Tech, Durham College in Whitby, or other nearby location, as specified by UNENE. Lecture sessions are scheduled on four weekends (eight instructional days).

The Sessional Lecturer will co-deliver this course with another Instructor. The Sessional Lecturer and co-Instructor will collaborate to prepare, deliver and grade all course material and student assessments and be available for consultation with students during and following completion of the course session. Learning objectives and outcomes are expected to be described in a course outline/syllabus and will be provided. Timely marking of assignments and other assessments, and the use of marking rubrics, is expected.

This position falls within the bargaining unit represented by the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) and will be subject to the terms and conditions of the collective agreement between the University and PSAC. The collective agreement may be found on the Human Resources section of our website. Candidates will be required to certify that they are currently legally eligible to work in Canada for the duration of the contract.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will have demonstrated excellent teaching contributions with a proven aptitude for teaching at the undergraduate/graduate level.

Required Skills:

  • A proven commitment to providing innovative and inclusive teaching strategies
  • Evidence of an ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Excellent communication skills with an ability to maintain effective relationships with a range of faculty, staff and students
  • Candidates will have demonstrated excellence in teaching undergraduate/graduate students in a <> program
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with the Learning Management System, Canvas
  • Demonstrated ability to deliver classes remotely, using online modalities such as Kaltura Media and Google Meets
  • Proven experience managing large classes and diverse populations
  • Experience coordinating and supervising Teaching Assistants as applicable
  • Excellent organizational skills are needed to effectively manage course delivery, the marking of assignments and exams and the ability respond to student enquiries in a timely manner

Education:

  • A PhD in Nuclear Engineering, or equivalent of education and extensive nuclear industrial experience
  • Documented nuclear industrial experience with the BWRX-300 SMR design, as well as knowledge of other SMR designs, are needed
  • Documented expertise in nuclear thermalhydraulics and safety design

Priority will be given to an Internal Applicant who has taught any course for the University in three (3) different sessions in the past thirty-six (36) months, provided they meet the requirements for the position as outlined in the job posting.
