About the role

Position type: fixed-term contract Compensation: $22/hour Start date: December 18, 2025 Deadline to apply: November 10, 2025 at 5pm Description The Urban Ranger positions are key roles working within the Facilities team to keep the Bentway site & skate trail safe, clean and welcoming for all our visitors during our winter season. This position is ideal for people who enjoying working with a team, being physical, and spending time outdoors. About The Bentway works “to ignite the urban imagination”, using the city as site, subject, and canvas. Anchored under Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway and guiding its complex future, The Bentway is a growing public space, and much more. We are a new type of civic organization: a not-for-profit, powered by vital partnerships with the City of Toronto, residents, supporters, artists, city-builders, and dreamers. The Bentway is a creative catalyst rooted in experimentation, leading a creative movement to re-imagine the opportunities of urban spaces. Key responsibilities Facility maintenance

  • Janitorial tasks: sweeping, mopping, washing windows, cleaning and sanitizing washrooms, picking up litter, emptying garbage receptacles and ensuring general site cleanliness
  • Under supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, assist in executing planned site maintenance, repairs and minor installations (including basic landscape, electrical, plumbing, painting, mechanical and general carpentry work).
  • Under supervision of the Facilities Supervisor, perform basic landscaping and grounds keeping duties such as mowing the grass, basic garden maintenance, clearing snow, maintaining pathways and perimeters as required
  • Maintaining and cleaning tools and equipment
  • Assist with the completion of logs and check lists
  • Other duties as assigned related to the operation of the Bentway site.

Customer service/event work

  • Serve as a front-line customer service representative for visitors and other members of the public.
  • Assist with set up and tear down of programs, events and activations

Health and safety

  • Work with the team to ensure the site is safe and clear of hazards at all times
  • Assist with recording concerns, accidents and incidents and escalate when appropriate
  • Assist with or perform first aid and call emergency services when needed
  • Attend health and safety training as required.

Qualifications

  • Experience in janitorial maintenance, grounds keeping, garden maintenance, or customer service is considered an asset but not required
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays in varied weather conditions.
  • Must be able to perform frequent standing, bending, twisting, crawling, kneeling, squatting, climbing, reaching and grasping
  • Must be able to lift, push or pull up to 50lbs
  • Willing to work safely and to follow all required protocols
  • Good interpersonal skills including the ability to work in a team environment and communicate with our visitors.
  • Standard First Aid is considered an asset

The Bentway, formerly known as Project: Under Gardiner, is a unique and innovative public space that will transform the vacant and forgotten area underneath Toronto's Gardiner Expressway into a new gathering place for our city's growing population.

Stretching from Strachan Avenue to Spadina Avenue, this 1.75 km trail and series of public spaces will knit together seven neighbourhoods – Exhibition Place, Liberty Village, Niagara, Fort York Neighbourhood, Bathurst Quay, Wellington Place and CityPlace – and become a gateway to the waterfront, while providing access to important attractions and destinations – from the Molson Amphitheatre to the Rogers Centre and Harbourfront Centre. This dynamic new urban corridor will activate the community with a continuous multi-use trail providing access to year-round activities and events, including gardens, a skating rink, recreational amenities, public markets, public art, special exhibitions, festivals, theatre and musical performances and more.
