POSITION OVERVIEW
Investment Senior Analysts join one of our teams as an early-career professional to operate parts of the process of evaluating potential deals and of monitoring our current portfolio.
The Growth Venture Fund team operates within BDC Capital and is focused on growing and scaling the next generation of Canadian venture-backed champions. Currently investing out of the 500M$ Growth Venture Fund, our participations range from $5M to 25M in late stage (>$10M in revenues) venture capital backed companies in Canada, across a broad range of technology sectors. The Growth Venture Fund team currently manages 26 active late-stage companies. Total AUM is over 900M$.
In this role, you will network, research, and perform analysis for prospective and current investments. These will cover strategic topics such as markets, industries, ecosystems, and competition, as well as operational ones, such as financials, management, and products. You are expected to leverage sharp analytic skills and be able to work alongside experts on a variety of market and industrial subjects.
CHALLENGES TO BE MET
Searching for Deals
- Analyze the underlying portfolio of partner funds to identify promising follow-on investment opportunities and monitor upcoming fundraising
- Conduct market research and scouting to guide the fund's investment strategy, identifying emerging markets, sectors, technologies or companies
Closing Transactions
- Conduct due diligence analysis on the company market, competition, management, sales, products, capitalization table, and anything else relevant to determine the potential business value and exit strategies of the companies
- Manage operational tasks as part of due diligence, such as booking meetings and preparing interview guides
- Determine and validate performance indicators, feed evaluation models, forecasts and financial pro-formas
- Analyze technical documentation and/or collaborate with technical consultants to evaluate technologies, products, and services
- Assist with referral calls with competitors, customers, industry experts, and current or former employees of the prospective company
- Perform routine background checks, KYC (Know Your Customer), and Anti-Money Laundering (AML)
Portfolio Management & Support
- Monitor portfolio performance, compare performance to forecasts and models, and communicate potential opportunities and issues to managers
- Occasionally participate in investor board meetings as an observer, staying informed of developments and reporting relevant information to partners
- Helping investors pitch potential suppliers, investors, and employees
Platform construction
- Assist in managing the transaction chain and provide financial analysis for period-end reports
- Support other team members, as needed, throughout the lifecycle of an investment
- Ensure that investment research records and other information collected, including legal documentation, are maintained in accordance with our policies and procedures
- Ensure that new and existing investment files are properly documented by monitoring investments, amendments, and disbursements, including financial analysis and forecasting
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
Typical Background
- 2 to 4 years of experience in a role involving structured thinking, financial analysis, and technical expertise. These profiles are likely to come from, but are not limited to:
- Finance roles: venture capital, private equity, investment bank, accounting firm
- Operator roles: technology startup, industry-leading corporation, industry specialist
- Advisory roles: consulting, law, corporate strategy, corporate development
- Bachelor’s degree in Commerce, Economics, Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM). Other degrees are viable, if the professional has strong analytical skills
Technical Knowledge
- Good skills in Excel, particularly in building financial models that include sensitivity analysis and scenario modeling, as well as performing data analysis. Any other analytic tools and techniques are an asset
- Fair ability to use other MS-suite applications, mainly Word and PowerPoint
- Ability to answer questions politely in the context of a presentation to executive audiences
- Any technology skills with wide application, such as coding, chemistry, electronics are an asset
- Operational knowledge of any technical industry is an asset
- Bilingualism in French and English is an asset
