The Vice President, Enterprise Governance will set the strategic direction and implementation roadmap for enterprise-wide governance at Aviva Canada. This role is pivotal in strengthening operational resilience, business continuity, and crisis management, while ensuring alignment with global standards and regulatory requirements. The VP will lead the first line of defense in operational risk governance and serve as a key influencer in strategic and transformation discussions across the organization.
What you’ll do
Strategic Leadership
- Define and drive the strategic direction for Enterprise Governance.
- Lead localization of Group Standards to Canada, ensuring alignment with global objectives.
- Influence senior stakeholders through thematic insights on operational risks.
- Transition the organization toward a proactive, data-driven risk environment.
Governance & Compliance
- Lead the Enterprise Governance function and chair the monthly Enterprise Governance Forum.
- Oversee compliance with corporate governance and federal/provincial regulations, including OSFI B-10.
- Prepare and present governance materials to the Operational Risk & Resilience Committee and the Board of Directors.
- Ensure effective controls and risk management frameworks are embedded across the organization.
Operational Risk Management
- Provide first line Operational Risk & Control Management (ORCM) support to the COO function.
- Oversee the Risk & Control Self-Assessment process and Common Operational Risk Management Mapping.
- Partner with Line 1 owners to support risk-informed decision-making.
- Lead incident oversight and thematic risk analysis.
- Represent Canada in Group-level operational risk discussions.
People Leadership
- Build and lead a high-performing Enterprise Governance team.
- Provide indirect oversight to 9 Line 1 Risk & Governance teams and Risk Domain leads.
- Foster a culture of psychological safety, continuous improvement, and customer-centricity.
What you’ll bring

Graduate degree (e.g., MBA) preferred; professional designations such as Actuary, Accountant, or Chartered Insurer are considered assets.

Minimum 10+ years of progressive experience in Property & Casualty (P&C) insurance.

Minimum 7+ years of leadership experience, including 3+ years leading leaders and 5+ years managing high-performance teams.

Experience chairing management committees and presenting at Board Committees.

Internal audit or risk experience is an asset.

Strong awareness of Canadian regulatory regimes and business environment.

Deep understanding of operational risk management.

Extensive experience designing, assessing, and embedding risk management frameworks, processes, and controls.

Proven ability to manage complex projects with diverse stakeholders.

Strong negotiation, influence, and relationship management skills.

Ability to drive results through collaborative, outcomes-focused relationships.

In-depth understanding of industry trends, developments, and regulatory changes.
