The Opportunity
As a Mark IV Tamper Operator, you will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a Mark IV Track Tamper to maintain railway track geometry in accordance with engineering standards, regulatory requirements, and project specifications.
Working as part of a track maintenance crew, you’ll play a critical role in ensuring proper alignment, level, and stability of track infrastructure while complying with CROR, railway owner rules, Ontario OHSA requirements, and internal safety standards.
This role is more than machine operation — it’s about precision, teamwork, and safety driven execution in the field.
What You’ll Do
- Operate a Mark IV Track Tamper to surface, line, and level railway track to specified tolerances
- Perform tamping operations on mainline, siding, and yard tracks as directed
- Interpret track geometry data, lift/line instructions, and work plans
- Adjust tamping parameters based on ballast conditions, track structure, and job requirements
- Comply with CROR, railway owner rules, and Ontario occupational health and safety regulations
- Maintain valid Track Safety / Railway Worker Protection certification
- Participate in job briefings, hazard assessments, and safety meetings
- Ensure safe working distances, machine clearances, and proper protection while on track
- Conduct daily pre trip and post trip inspections of the Mark IV Tamper
- Identify, report, and assist with troubleshooting mechanical or hydraulic issues
- Perform minor maintenance and housekeeping of the machine as required
- Maintain accurate equipment, inspection, and production records
- Work closely with Foremen, Track Supervisors, and other machine operators
- Assist ground crews when required (e.g., switch adjustments, set up, clean up)
- Communicate effectively using radio protocols and hand signals during operations
What You Bring
- 2–3 years of experience operating a Mark IV Track Tamper or similar production tamping equipment
- Proven experience in railway track maintenance or heavy rail construction
- Valid Track Safety / CROR certification, or ability to obtain
- Ability to read and understand track plans, geometry data, and operating manuals
- Strong mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
- Safety focused mindset with a commitment to following procedures
- Ability to work long hours, nights, weekends, and shift work as required
- Physically capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Reliable, self motivated, and comfortable working in remote locations
- Willingness to join or maintain union membership
