Facilities Management

Facilities Management is responsible for the planning, development, engineering, construction, operation, maintenance and stewardship of all buildings, infrastructure, sites and services within Western’s campus community.

The Important Role You'll Play

Under the direction of the Associate Vice-President, Facilities Management (AVP), the Managing Director, Facilities Development & Engineering and University Architect oversees all planning, design, and construction of campus facilities and lands, ensuring they align with the institution's goals, aesthetics, and sustainability standards. The Managing Director will provide strategic leadership to a team of highly trained, skilled professionals responsible for supporting the deliverables of the Facilities Development & Engineering department.

As part of the Facilities Management Division leadership team, the Managing Director will collaborate with FM leadership to set standards, design principles and construction delivery to enable effective and safe operations. The Managing Director will oversee the development of multi-year development and capital improvement strategies. The Managing Director is accountable for leading planning activities supporting project design, aesthetics, campus land use, space planning, transportation planning and infrastructure planning. The role exists to influence, support, and implement the University’s Strategic, planning and sustainability strategies and Long-Range Space Plans and goals for institutional development through the physical environment and building resources of the University

Qualifications

Education

  • Professional Degree in Architecture and must be a licensed Architect in Ontario (OAA)
  • Master of Business Administration preferred
  • Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) Accreditation preferred
  • Project Management Certification would be an asset

Experience

  • 8 years’ experience as a Registered Architect in Canada, leading a multi-disciplinary planning and project management team
  • Management experience in the field of architecture and/or facilities management with the planning, design and administration of projects
  • Experience in a higher education work environment and campus planning would be an asset
  • Experience in staff supervision preferred

Knowldege & Skills

  • Well-developed planning, organizational and project management skills
  • Proficiency in using a variety of information technology tools and the ability to understand and adapt new tools to business operations
  • Excellent knowledge of the principles of design applied in planning and designing of large complex institutional buildings (e.g. research, medical, or similar facilities)
  • Ability to develop tender documents, construction contracts, and consultant agreements in collaboration with stakeholders, legal counsel and procurement personnel in accordance with industry standards
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of applicable building codes, by-laws and regulations including provincial and municipal accessibility, fire, health and safety standards
  • Superior problem-solving and judgment skills
  • Exceptional analytical, quantitative and deduction skills
  • Ability to combine disparate facts and information to form appropriate conclusions.
  • Ability to make decisions, often with incomplete information
  • Ability to effectively convey information of a highly technical or complex nature to non-technical audiences
  • Superior communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with executive management, board members and internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to build relationships and work well across all functions and areas
  • Experience in collaborative team environments, delegating workload and responsibilities
  • Excellent human relations skills to positively motivate staff and effectively utilize all members of the unit
  • Ability to lead and manage design teams on large-scale projects
  • Must be able to manage multiple assignments simultaneously and have strong organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize and oversee multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
