About the role

About Us

At the Department of Opportunities and Social Development (OSD), we are a large and diverse department providing a broad portfolio of programs and services including Child and Family Wellbeing (CFW), Employment Support Services(ESS), Income Assistance (IA), Homelessness and Supportive Housing, and Disability Support Program(DSP).

Through our services, we advocate and help vulnerable Nova Scotians be independent, self-reliant, and secure.  We work collaboratively across the province with a strong dedicated network of supports and staff, to achieve desired and shared outcomes for all.

About Our Opportunity

As a key team member, the Scheduler will report to the Manager, Service Delivery Access & Transportation, and will play a vital role in the development, coordination, and upkeep of our regional access and transport schedule.

This isn't your average desk job – it's a fast-paced environment that demands exceptional multitasking skills, the ability to prioritize effectively, and the agility to pivot at a moment's notice. Alongside managing individual employee and client schedules, you'll also engage with clients and foster parents, sometimes during challenging moments.

If you thrive under pressure, excel in juggling multiple responsibilities, and are ready to make a meaningful impact, this may be a great fit for you.

Primary Accountabilities

Your primary accountabilities will revolve around ensuring the seamless management of schedules, requiring regular updates and modifications based on evolving requirements. You'll monitor the regional access and transport schedule, ensuring its accuracy and timeliness for a large team and clients that we serve.

In addition to this, you'll foster strong collaboration with Team Leads, Access Support Workers, and other departmental colleagues to maintain the schedule's integrity and efficiency. Your role will frequently involve engaging with various stakeholders, including parents, foster parents, daycares, and other professionals, using various communication channels such as phone calls, emails, and text messages.

Qualifications and Experience

You have four (4) years of related experience in an administrative or coordination environment.

In addition, you demonstrate:

  • Proven ability to provide outstanding client service, especially in crisis-driven situations.
  • Adaptability in crisis situations along with the ability to remain composed and make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Teamwork and collaboration, as well as an ability to work well independently
  • Effective verbal and written communication, along with strong organizational abilities.
  • A keen eye for detail to ensure accuracy and precision.
  • Proficiency in various computer applications.

Though not required, the following are considered assets:

  • Knowledge of scheduling practices within an adjusted work-hour environment.
  • General understanding of services offered by the Department and other community agencies.

We will assess the above qualifications and competencies using one or more of the following tools: written examination, standardized tests, oral presentations, interview(s), and reference checks.

Equivalency

We recognize equivalent combinations of training, education, and experience, providing opportunities for individuals with diverse backgrounds to contribute their skills and expertise. Equivalencies include, but are not limited to:

  • A completed related bachelors degree
  • A completed related diploma and two (2) years of related experience

Applicants relying on education and experience equivalencies must demonstrate such equivalencies in their application.

Benefits

Based on the employment status and union agreement, the Government of Nova Scotia offers its employees a wide range of benefits such as a Defined Benefit Pension Plan, Health, Dental, Life Insurance, General illness, Short and Long Term Disability, Vacation and Employee and Family Assistance Programs.  For information on all our Benefit program offerings, click here: Benefits for government employees.

Working Conditions

Work is performed in an open office environment which may be stressful as work and interactions with others are continual and interruptive.

This role requires repetitive tasks on a regular basis, good hand dexterity for continual phone and computer use, and a high level of visual and mental concentration.

Accuracy and a high volume of work are expected while meeting deadlines and requests from Social Workers and Access Orders from the Courts.
