Hours: 22.5 hours per week

Status : Permanent Part-time

Shifts : Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday with some flexibility.

Position Summary

The Toronto Lung Transplant Program (TLTP) Biobank is expanding, and we are looking to recruit a Research Technical Assistant I to help with collecting, processing, and storing clinical bio specimens and maintaining the biorepository database system. Working under the direction of the Principal Investigator and/or more senior staff, the Research Technical Assistant I utilizes general knowledge and skills to perform routine, somewhat repetitive standardized laboratory research techniques and procedures.

Duties and responsibilities of the position include, but may not be limited to:

  • The successful candidate will be able to accurately and efficiently process clinical biospecimens within standard operating procedure guidelines that include human blood samples, lung fluid, tissue banking, and support ongoing clinical studies/trials.
  • Validate data from related and/or unrelated sources as well as communicate and maintain records of specimen/experimental data.
  • Prepare, validate, and troubleshoot laboratory shipments of biological material(s) as per universal guidelines and standards.
  • Train various staff on biorepository collections and guidelines.
  • Additional duties will include reagent preparation, tissue banking, data logging as well as general laboratory upkeep, maintenance, and administrative tasks.
  • Attend regular meetings and contribute to ongoing collaborative projects.
  • Previous experience in a laboratory environment is strongly recommended.
  • Proficiency in English with excellent communication skills will be required.
  • The successful candidate will be self-motivated, technically proficient, organized, and will work well in a team.
  • Handling/dealing with hazardous materials and/or reagents.
  • LIMS knowledge, application, and experience is strongly recommended.
  • Generate reports related to data, samples, and trends of various capacity to staff.
  • Troubleshoot various laboratory equipment – (centrifuges, microscopes, balances, etc.).

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s degree or College diploma in a health-related discipline, or equivalent.
  • At minimum, some experience with laboratory work/handling biological specimens.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of laboratory procedures related to handling, storing and testing of specimens, including biological safety and specimen data management systems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, excellent organization, ability to learn quickly and work independently.
  • Knowledge and application of computer software (MS Office and data management systems).
  • Ability to work under pressure and perform multiple concurrent tasks.
  • Attention to detail is essential.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Previous experience with bio specimen shipment and handling dangerous goods would be an asset.
  • Outstanding organizational skills with the capacity to ensure proper compliance with research protocols, biological safety measures, and universal precautions are mandatory.
  • Ability to perform duties in a professional and courteous manner and produce high quality work while meeting deadlines in accordance to UHN standards.
  • Ability to understand and comply with regulatory issues involving human subjects and clinical trials.
  • Willingness to learn and problem solving skills.
  • Knowledge and/or experience in biotechnology business is preferred.
