AST199H1F - Astronomy at the Frontier
AST199H1F - First-year undergraduate seminar primarily for non-science majors with an aim to build general scientific literacy by discussing selected topics in current astronomy, cosmology, and space science.
Topics could include: formation of stars; lives and deaths of stars; stellar corpses: white dwarfs, neutron stars, and black holes; planets around other stars; recent results from Hubble and other telescopes; architecture of the solar system; exploration in the solar system; the invisible universe: dark energy and dark matter; first light; formation of galaxies; the age and future of the universe.

Class schedule: Monday 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM

Salary:
Sessional Lecturer I: $9,820.07
Sessional Lecturer I - Long Term: $10,510.04
Sessional Lecturer II: $10,510.04
Sessional Lecturer II - Long Term: $10,760.28
Sessional Lecturer III: $10,760.28
Sessional Lecturer III - Long Term: $11,030.36
Should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates in the collective agreement shall prevail.
Minimum Qualifications:
Ph.D. with an academic background in astronomy or astrophysics with experience in teaching university courses in astronomy required, preferably at U of T. Advanced prior knowledge of the subject-matter of the course and topic-related teaching experience. Previous experience in teaching a similar course is highly desirable. The successful candidate must demonstrate a track record of professionalism, strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills, and teaching excellence. The hiring criteria will include previous teaching experience and/or academic qualifications and suitability for the position to include a demonstrated commitment to pedagogic strategies that foster an inclusive learning environment. Related research and a record of recent research achievement is considered an asset to this position.
Description of duties:
All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including developing a course syllabus and preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments, test and exams; timely completion and release of grades and feedback to students throughout the term; holding regular weekly office hours; addressing any issues of academic integrity that arise related to this course.
