About the role
Reporting to the Manager, Urban Design & Landscape Architecture, the Junior Landscape Architect is responsible for undertaking technical reviews of planning applications, development proposals, and capital projects from landscape architecture, urban design, and development coordination perspectives. This role provides professional assessments and recommendations in accordance with municipal, provincial, and federal regulations, policies, guidelines, and standards.
Responsibilities:
- Undertake technical review of planning applications, development proposals and capital projects from a landscape architecture, urban design and development coordination perspectives
- Conduct research, prepare reports, and provide policy recommendations on landscape architecture and urban design best practices, policies, regulations, guidelines and standards
- Interpret and implement planning documents including landscaping design policies, zoning by-laws, official plans, and urban design guidelines
- Coordinate application review with Parks Planning and Development and Parks Operations
- Negotiate enhanced design elements and approval conditions
- Review site improvement and landscaping cost estimates
- Administer development agreements and release of site improvement and landscaping securities
- Conduct site inspections of completed projects from a landscaping perspective
- Respond in a clear and effective manner to public inquiries
- Exercise professional judgement in assessment documents and commenting on documents in consideration of municipal objectives and applicable municipal and external policies, guidelines, standards and regulations
- Use problem solving techniques to support municipal objectives and achieve high quality and timely landscaping, development and urban design
- Liaise with various internal departments and with external organizations, including municipalities, agencies, and ministries, on landscape architecture, urban design, and development coordination
- Perform other duties as assigned

Requirements:
- Completion of a four (4) year Bachelor’s degree in Landscape Architecture, plus a minimum of two (2) years’ experience as a landscape architect in a municipal setting or consultant/design setting, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Proven ability to communicate effectively in written and oral form
- Eligible for full membership with the Ontario Association of Landscape Architects (OALA)
- Experience using PC equipment and related software (e.g. MS Office) and willing to train on specialized software related to landscape architecture and planning matters
- Well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to work in a team environment
- Strong research, analytical and reasoning skills
- Ability to work on own initiative and adaptive to changing circumstances
- Ability to provide own transportation as required
This position is eligible for hybrid work.
